I bow to the american flag. My reason is because i love this country and what it stands for. There is know other reason. If one of my students asks not too, I will not push the issue because of the varies religions, some of which bow only to their God. I ask those who will for a moment of prayer or silence. I was in the US Army for nearly ten years. The flag means a lot to me. But I won't push it on others. Nor will I push my beliefs. We have the American and Korean flags hung next to each other at the front of the room with the American flag in the right hand (senior) position. We bow to the flags and the instructor at the beginning and end of each class. I've been teaching for almost 10 years now and this is the first time this has every come up for me, I'm hoping to get a little feedback from the digest on how someone may have handled a similiar situation. This is how my instructor did things and how I have always conducted classes. Is there anyone out there who has decided to not bow to the Korean flag? Any suggestions on what I can do about this prospective student? I consider the bow to the flags a simple sign of respect to our nation and those who came before us as the founders of the art. Although I haven't talked to her about it yet, I'm guess that she sees the bow as a sign of subserviance to Korea. I'm sure it can probably be worked out by talking with her, but I am inclined not to allow her an exception to the way we do things. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Folks, I know this is a strange request, but I live in Japan and would like to continue training in Hapkido over the Japanese martial arts, so I was wondering if anyone knows of a Hapkido Dojo in the area of Tokyo or Saitama as that is where I live. Any assistance would be fantastic! Do they feel comfortable with bowing to the instructor?? A common way to greet the flag in Korea is by placing your right hand on your left chest (hearth). Maybe they do feel comfortable with that? But in that case everybody in class would have to greet like that to the flag. I wouldn't make exceptions for students, unless they have a physical condition. MC Reply #1 After 15 years of doing things the way my instructor did, one of my current mentors said "we salute flags and bow to instructors"......as a sign of respect. MC Reply #2 In a previous school my instructors allowed some Muslim students to stand at attention as the rest of the class bowed. Yes, it worked fine for everyone in the dojang. The mother wore the full headscarf and earned a chodan after about 4 years. The daughters were forbiden to practice one steps, sparring or self defense with boys....unless permission was given by the father. He once allowed the girls to spar boys in a tournament as they had no other matches and the girls both won.
