I used the ‘question mark/escort’ move as part of my self-defense scenario for my black belt test in May. (OK, OK – I know that’s not the technical term for it, but that’s how I remember it lol). You were so patient with us junior belts when we bombarded you with questions between sessions. You obviously love to teach your art. I look forward to participating in another one of your sessions at the next Jackson throw-down in September. Lois __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir, Sorry you do not practice a traditional art. Etiquette is not optional behavior in our org, and those who do not adhere have their inhibitions addressed within the system. I also do not advertise that I am a martial artist, but if someone acknowledges me, I respond ,exchange a brief pleasantry perhaps, and continue with what I'm doing. If someone around wishes to comment or question such behavior, they are told I practice a traditional art, nothing more, nothing less. I am always most willing to help guide someone to a school that is right for them if they have an question regarding this Respectfully, George --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 07:49:42 -0400 From: "Boit Clinton Capt AF/DPMP" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Sport and Art Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "Art" is a guy with no arms or legs that you hang on a wall. "Sport" is a dog with no legs that you use as a football. Sorry, just trying to give you all a laugh. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 13:33:32 -0500 From: dean_lopez@houston-f-body.org To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Please repost the "long" video link again! Kum Sul Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Been lurking here awhile and finally have a question worthy of your input. I am a Cho-Dan, about to test for E-Dan in a traditional Tang Soo Do school. I would enjoy learning some traditional sword forms and KumSul has come up frequently. My question is what have you guys heard about Kum Sul? Do you think purchasing the videos is worth it?(50.00) And lastly, is there something else I should be looking into? If things go well with this I would like to integrate these forms into my class as a change of pace. Thanks. --__--__-- Message: 9 Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 22:48:51 -0500 From: "Edward Peters, III" To: Dojang Digest Subject: [The_Dojang] a different question about reffering to people. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net So we have been talking a lot about how and when to use the terms Master and Grand Master and Sabunim, et al. Is there a socially accepted norm for this concept when referring to Millitary personnel? I am not now, nor have I ever been in the military, so I would not know if and when to address someone by their rank. Is it Mr. Smith, Captain Smith, Grand Master Smith, or just plain Bob. I was always raised to refer to someone the way you were introduced to them or by what they themselves tell you to call them. I think I told this story before, but here goes. One night while instructing the HKD class we had a visitor. He was a 5th degree BB in TKD and he taught the morning class at our school. I also knew him professionally at work. I asked him if I should introduce him to the class as Dr. Dailey, or as Master Dailey. He looked me straight in the eye and said "Just call me Will". That was how I introduced him to the class. Of course, it was with the understanding that he was infact a 5th degree BB, and not just some guy of the street. Having him sit in with us sparring was a really treat. he was wide eyed through most of our sparring. Also what about people from other arts? Does a Sifu (SP) outrank a Sabumnim or a Sensi? I think I am just going to start calling everyone "Your Majesty" Just still thinking about this stuff.
