Enjoyed by 60 million people in 179 countries, the sport has greatly contributed toward raising Korea's profile. When the IOC issued a report last month that the martial art gets no TV revenues at all while judgments are biased and interest in games is low, there were fears that Taekwondo might have had it as an Olympic discipline. The decision is valid until 2012. Chances are that another vote on the list for the 2016 games will take place in 2009. If we fail to make adequate preparations now, there is no guarantee that taekwondo will not suffer the fate of baseball and softball and be thrown out. The crux is how to make the game more interesting and attract the attention of spectators and TV stations. Only if we manage to maximize interest in watching the sport without compromising the game's intrinsic spirit of "refining the body and spirit" can it survive in an Olympic environment increasingly dominated by TV ratings and advertising revenues. The World Taekwondo Federation must think hard how it can win audiences for often highly enjoyable matches, such as the one Moon Dae-sung delivered in the heavyweight finals at the Athens Olympics last year. A good guide can be found in judo, which out of concern for TV audiences has introduced colored dress and drastically changed the rules. The federation must also make sure the squabbles over biased judgments that arose in Athens in front of IOC Chairman Jacque Rogge are never repeated. We must quickly re-establish a "post-Kim Un-yong" sports diplomacy system. We must regain the IOC seat lost by Kim, the former IOC vice-president, and put in place a personnel network that manages relations with foreign athletes well. Both the government and the general public must help to firmly cement the position of our national sport. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sat, 09 Jul 2005 17:33:41 -0500 From: "Rick Clark" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] In Case of Emergency Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This was sent to me by one of my guys in the UK, it seems like a good idea. Following the disaster in London . . . East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency ( ICE ) " campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston. The idea is that you store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also email this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. Rick Clark www.ao-denkou-kai.org --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 14:34:42 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] hapkido workshops Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just a quick reminder: 7/29/05 I will conducting a hapkido seminar in Fargo all day on July 29th at my dojang. I have invited Rick Clark up to my school for a seminar on bunkai and basic pressure points. The seminar is scheduled for August 6th, 2005. We should be starting about 1:00pm and going for about 4 hours or so. It's going to be a small seminar as I only have a limited amount of floor space in my school so there will be a lot of one on one instruction. I'm located in Monticello, MN. You can find out more about the seminar at the following web site: http://www.ao-denkou-kai.org/minnesota.htm Please contact me off line if you are interested in any further information. Most matches were at 2:00AM. Then they showed just a couple again at 7:00 AM I dont know what most other people do, but Im at work at 7:00 AM and would rather not watch a vidoe tape after knowing who won the matches. Much of the credit should go to local sports officials, who have strived to renovate the ancient martial art and conducted vigorous sports diplomacy. Still, the sport's leaders can hardly remain complacent, as the decision of the International Olympic Committee holds good only until the 2012 London Olympics. It is urgent to further solidify taekwondo's global status so that taekwondo supporters can be free of constant worry. The biggest problem of taekwondo is its lack of excitement as a spectator sport. The beautiful kick shown by Korean heavyweight Moon Dae-sung at Athens Olympics final is quite rare. This, combined with frequent misjudgment disputes, has sharply lowered viewing rates, drawing few advertisers. So, the World Taekwondo Federation's reform plan was right in that it focused on making the sport more speedy and thrilling, while introducing electronic scoring devices for more objective refereeing. Taekwondo's survival at the world sports festival was a great relief, coming as it did on the heels of an embezzlement scandal involving the sport's former head, Kim Un-yong. It also teaches us a lesson about why the nation's sports diplomacy should rely on system and organization rather than on a few individuals. Despite his initial contribution to the sport, Kim helped bring about its decline due to his way of behavior and to factionalism. The rumor of a "triangular deal" behind the vote _ Kim, IOC and Seoul _ also leaves a bad aftertaste. Of paramount importance in this regard is the need for cultivating capable sports diplomats. Aside from purely athletic aspects, the nation requires talented sports marketers. It is for this reason that the world governing body of taekwondo ought to consider ushering in foreign experts who can better sell the sport to global audiences. Also important for the WTF is unifying its organization with the North Korea-backed International Taekwondo Federation. For thousands of years, taekwondo has been a martial art that represented Korea. It also is the nation's first sports culture export. There are 179 member nations in the WTF with 60 million people practicing the sport, thanks mostly to the pioneering taekwondo masters. It is good for the WTF to aim at increasing those figures to 100 million taekwondo enthusiasts and 202 member nations. The first thing they ought to do, however, is to revive the boom at home, and show better performances at international competitions. It is necessary for the WTF, government and the public to join forces to rejuvenate taekwondo as a sport in which sportsmanship as well as fitness in body and mind become one. Only then will taekwondo be able to resist challenges from Japanese karate and Chinese wushu to represent Asian martial arts to the world. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
