Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Let's focus on one thing and forget Martial Arts for now. Let's try to evaluate the whole purpose of being a PARENT for once. As for me, any violent movies, violent TV shows, comics, video games and other related things that results to harmful to our kids are not and should not be permitted. Period. This is what happened to our society that we sometimes parents are to be blamed for our children's behavior and we tolerated their needs not for their safety - young girls wearing too skimpy clothes and boys wear pants that are too low that you can almost see their butts (lucky they have underwear) and they invite trouble rather than their well-being. I think our responsibilities to our children should not be lenient and loosely enough that our children that creates bad example to other kids. Proper guidance or discipline is a must not just as "you-listen-I'm-your-father-thing" line of attitude towards your children. I'm a father of two and I don't want my children hurt each other that results to death or other things as much a possible as long as I can. Thanks. Real TKD, as seen in this movie during the film and especialy the tournament scene at the end is pretty darn interesting.... much better than any Olympic match. sandy --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Howard Spivey" To: Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 18:21:19 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Interesting boxing Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I'll never forget watching a great fight back some time in the early 80s, between the great Alexis Arguello and, IIRC, a guy named Roberto Elizondo, down in Texas in Elizondo's back yard. Arguello was pounding this guy's ribs for about 5 rounds. Finally, he connects with this mule kick of a punch to the Elizondo's side, and Elizondo just buckles, drops to his knees and motions to the referee that the fight is over. The expression of agony on his face said it all. TKO, Arguello. It was actually really impressive - and entertaining, for a boxing fan - to watch. "On this subject, when we watch boxing, what are we looking for? The stunning body shot or the head shot? Watching a boxer talented enough to beat a man down with body shots is impressive but not necessarily the most entertaining. Watching someone get their head handed to them with a ferocious blow to da kisser makes you jump outta your chair..." --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "jakskru" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Killing in Soo Bahk Do or other MA Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 15:37:50 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > I hope you never get in a situation where you have to stop and think > what would happen to you in a court of law if you have to defend > yourself. So I'll share a shortened version of it. I've been reading that children can't learn so called deadly techniques. The fact of the matter is, a child can make anything 'deadly' IF they aren't taught properly by their parents or guardians. For instance, a child sees WWF and thinks wow I'd like to do that. If they watch that unattended, they will try to do it to or with someone. But if the parent watches it with them and explain the training, the conditions in which it's done, the dangers, etc...that child has a better chance of not doing it and hurting someone. In America we sometimes forget that our kids are exposed to much more nonsense then children of let's say indigenious children in places like Africa. In some parts of Africa there are children that can hunt quite skillfully with a deadly weapon and this is taught to them at young ages. However, they don't play foolishly with the weapon. Many kids in our society have no sense of honor, respect, etc for self, family, land. So when you have kids who have no sense of authority (at home) or honor, and are oblivious to respect then what you have is a recipe for a disaster if they learn deadly techniques. The bottom line is everything starts at home. I raise my son 'old school' and because I do I teach him things I would never teach some of these kids around the way. My son is raised much like I was raised with a key emphasis on RESPECT for God, self, family, land, animals, and a FEAR (reverence) for God self and family and life. I allow him to be a child, but I am training him to be on the path of manhood. IF we desire to teach children real martial arts we need to teach them first ethics, and help develop an honorable character within them...at least plant positive knowledge seeds in their mind...which will produce positive fruit within them. Then and only then is it safe to teach them the real deal in martial arts. Jye foxxee wrote: Dana: Chances are that this kid watched WWF on t.v. and wanted to imitate the wrestlers. I heard about a simular incident several years ago when a boy body slammed his baby brother on the floor and killed him. Since then, I forbid my kids to watch the show unless they showed some kind of responsibility. If caught imitating the moves, I wouldn't let them watch the show or they got a severe lecture on the subject. The best way, if they insist on watching that kind of show, is to watch it with them. Of course, when it involves my husband, that would last only five minutes. He cannot get through the BS before the fight commences and me, I cannot stand watching that show knowing it's a script. If you want real wrestling, put the kids in sports in schools. Keep them from watching that crap on t.v. From the way they dress and the way they talk, that's not a suitable show for children. Then again, I don't think Sponge Bob Square Pants is a suitable show either....Better yet...send the kids outside to play and see reality. You will not always be able to escape or run away. i disagree, unless you are already held down by 6 guys or something, or unless you are put into a box or cage with locked or no doors and you are in a gladiator tournament, then if there is a will, there is a way. >We must all be aware of the laws in each state. yes we must, and that was my point originally...and i believe that if you check, attacking mercilessly violates most of them. >Notice the last statement, "being prepared to." If someone shovels a knife to your throat are you going to ask about awareness or freeze? here is the awareness part...why are you somewhere with knife weilding villians in the first place? i can understand if you are in law enforcement or some such occupation that takes you into an area like that...why didnt you avoid the dark alley, or park in a well lit place? why arent you scanning the area as you walk for possible bad guys? this is what i meant by awareness (partially). >Though self defense encompasses awareness and survival, it would also be considered survival to apply a throw followed by a well placed stomp to the skull. Most of all, it is all up to the person being attacked. try to throw someone with a knife to your throat and see how quickly your breathing passage opens up...why not give them your wallet? if that is not possible for whatever reason (when there is a knife to your throat and you are not being robbed, then my guess is that you are already dead because he wanted you dead and you were not *aware* enough to see it coming), then i would suggest that if you must defend in that particular situation, grab the knife blade first...better to have cut fingers that a cut throat, or so i have been told. > Train for both, be prepared for anything, and react. couldnt agree more...but just remember that is only a part of self-defense training...imho --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2005 09:32:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Sparring clip Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Here's a sparring clip of a teacher and pupil doing some light sparring.
