Avg Dan(Kukkiwon) $450 progressing about $100 per Dan up to $750 for 4th Dan so you get a class of 20 students twice a year taking either their 1st or subsequent Black Belt Test and the school has a hell of a payday. One of our local schools recently had a test and posted the kids names on the website (a no no for security reasons, never put the first and last name of a minor on the internet. One of the kids probably 15 years old tested for 4th, 5 years ago he just got his Black Belt. I did the math The GM cleared a cool $20K. Disgusting! Is the premise really for self confidence, which in my opinion is not good enough or more testing fees and free help. At the dojang I train at for HKD, TKD is also taught, WTF style. I will just say I train somewhere else for my TKD art. Most not all promote for I believe the money and free instructors they get to help with the classes. Even if there techniques stinks which most (not all) do as a young kids. When they do get to the serious stage they tin to put it together. That is around mid to late teens for most. The crimes vary, ranging from assaults to muggings. The martial art of Hapkido teaches evasion techniques that can give victims a fighting chance. Many people would categorize Hapkido as a "scientific" martial art, as every aspect of it is geared towards a single purpose: incapacitating an opponent in the most efficient and thorough manner possible using physics, geometry and physiology. Students of Hapkido learn how to use their attacker's momentum, size and body to avoid harmful situations. The results of the techniques of Hapkido are evasion, immobilization, and ultimately the student's personal safety. The techniques allow students the opportunity to get out of the attack by freeing themselves or securing their attacker. Master Sgt. Scott James is a student and teacher of Hapkido. Currently a fourth degree black belt, he has been training in the Korean martial art since 1993. As a communications technician, Sergeant James has been stationed around the world. "Because of my military career I have been very fortunate," Sergeant James said. "I have trained in Japan, Hawaii and Korea and in many places throughout the U.S." His first Hapkido School was in Japan. The experience changed his life and it was then that he vowed to have his own training school some day. "In that school we were like a big family," he said. "I still keep in touch with all of the people who trained with me in Japan. Hapkido has really touched my heart and helped me focus in life." Sergeant James wants to share his love for Hapkido with his community. He currently teaches a Hapkido class at the Hess Fitness Center and will be teaching a basic self defense class in August. "It is a practical self defense that works," he said, "it's highly effective against an attack. In today's always confusing and mixed up world you need to have some knowledge on how to defend yourself, to protect you and your family. You don't have to be a big strong person to practice Hapkido. It is designed so any person of any age and size can utilize its techniques." Staff Sergeant Jade Johnson, a blue belt who has studied Hapkido for the past two years agrees that the techniques work. "Hapkido gives me a sense of confidence," he said. "I know that I have the ability to control any situation that I may run into." There are 12 basic self defense moves where even children can manipulate an attacker by using the attacker's weight and momentum against him. Sergeant James says there are plenty of reasons to train in Hapkido. The best is for personal protection. "I really feel this training will benefit military members who are deploying. It's a must for their survival. It is right in line with the Integrated Self Defense training that the base offers, with the added twist that personnel will master the moves and be able to react on reflex to defend themselves. "For women and children living in today's world, this training is necessary now more than ever," he added. "Both of my children train in Hapkido and I'm confident that if someone tried to take them, they would be able to get away using techniques they have learned. "The reality is that a child will not be able to beat up an adult, but with Hapkido they will be able to manipulate a joint in the body and get away to safety." Besides self defense, an added benefit of Hapkido is physical fitness. "Being in shape when you train in Hapkido makes it easier, but it's not a requirement before you get started," Sergeant James said. "Believe me, if you train in Hapkido you will get in shape very rapidly. The International Hapkido Federation has had students lose up to 32 pounds in the first 60 days just from the exercise it puts your body through." While his weight loss hasn't been that dramatic, Sergeant Johnson says Hapkido has been an important part of his workout routine. "I have definitely been more active since studying Hapkido," he said. "I train at least three times a week, and it keeps me in shape." Many of the basic self defense techniques taught in Hapkido will be shared during the practical self defense class on Aug. 6 at the Hess Fitness center. The class will run from 10 a.m.-noon and costs $25 per person. The class is designed to show students how to easily defeat an attacker and protect themselves. The class is open to 40 people, ages 10 and up. Anyone interested can sign up at the Hess Fitness Center. --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Sat, 23 Jul 2005 21:19:33 -0500 From: "Edward Peters, III" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Thanks Master Kirsch Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net yeah what he said.
