Seems to me that if you post incorrect information but don't make it clear the source of that information, you may well be credited with it! Upon actually reading it, I see that there are more than a few errors. Further on the ren mai/du mai subject, these two meridians comprise what is known as the microcosmic orbit. This appears in many systems and is why when we meditate we sit cross legged and with tongue on roof of mouth. These two acts complete the microcosmic orbit and allow the energy (ki, chi or qi) to flow between the two meridians. The orbit is also seen in Indian traditions (up to 5000 years old) where the ki energy is called kundalini. When I was in India 2 years ago, I met an 80 year old Indian saint who told me of a system of breathing used by the yogis which is identical to the ki breathing used in martial arts systems. The use of the microcosmic orbit is also present in Tantric yoga (Tantra) which also has it's origins in India where the fact that it is coupled breathing by a male and a female, subtly changes the ki in each person. Not really martial arts I know but definitely related. SMITH BULLHEAD CITY - Lifetime Television warns that every two minutes, someone is a victim of rape or assault. According to Bullhead City police, in 2004 women fell victim to three reported rapes, 81 aggravated assaults, and 27 "other" assaults. Three new self-defense classes opening in the Bullhead City area next month may help women reduce those numbers. The classes will focus on women and seniors, the two groups most often victimized. For Ashley Merritt of the Martial Arts Academy, 420 S. Hwy. 95, the idea to offer self-defense classes to women came about after his fiance, Cyndie Whitney, attended a real estate workshop. "They gave her all these statistics about women being raped or attacked while showing homes alone," Merritt said. "It got me thinking that women in the area need a class that will help them be less vulnerable." Merritt, who was recently promoted to chief master instructor of the World Hwa Rang Do Federation of Huntington Beach, Calif., will focus on Ahm Ja, or dirty tricks. "I'm going to teach really serious anatomy, eye gouging, pressure points," Merritt said. "I'm taking for granted that these women will be mature enough to handle the information they will be given." The 4th-degree black belt - with 25 years of experience - is prepared to dress out in a Red Man suit and let the women practice techniques he will teach. "I'll put on the full body suit so that I can go out there and they can just beat the crap out of me," Merritt said. Along with teaching the women self-defense tactics, he said the program will be a stress reliever and fitness routine. "A lot of women are looking for an alternative to the gym," Merritt said. A different approach to educating students on self defense techniques will be taken by Mack Boone, a 6th-degree black belt in karate, judo and aiki-bujutsu, who will be teaching two self defense classes at Mohave Community College. "I will be teaching them how to defend themselves, not with aggression but with control," the 75-year-old Boone said. "The best approach to any self defense is awareness," Boone said. "But, should they get into some mischief they didn't intend to, they need to know what to do to get out of it." Bullhead City police spokeswoman Carrie Conner encourages women to learn how to protect themselves. "Though the numbers in our area aren't high for our size of community, it is something we can all benefit from," Conner said. "Being more aware of your surroundings is a very beneficial trait." Boone did not think seniors would be interested in an average martial arts class, but thought it was important with the large population of seniors in the Bullhead area that some form of self defense be offered. In the senior class, which will be offered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, he said he will focus on tactics that don't require much extraneous movement. "Aikido is the way of harmony," Boone said. "It teaches you how to blend in with an aggressor rather than fight them." As a senior himself, he understands the aerobic limits of his students. "It will be a toned down version of how to protect yourself," he said. Boone, who began studying martial arts 45 years ago in El Paso, Texas, and is still the inactive president of the Bujutsukan Martial Arts School, will apply many of the same methods to his classes extended to women, from 8:30-9:30 Monday and Wednesday evenings. "The things I will show them won't require them to outmuscle their attacker," Boone said. He is hoping to have guest speakers from the police department and victims groups appear in his classes. The four-week classes at MCC will begin Sept. 19, and cost less than $30. Merritt will offer a three-month program starting in September - at 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday - that will cost $70 per month. He encourages people to sign up in advance as an incentive to stick with it. "People have good intentions when they sign up but then they get busy and it's not a priority, I'm trying to figure out a way to make them stick with it," Merritt said. "It's not the money, you just can't learn self defense over night. It's a process, it takes time." --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
