I have been studying MA for 23 years and the best conditioning drills I can find are the drills taught by Karl Gotch and Matt Furey. To save all of you over $180 for the video and books, I will tell you what you do. 1. you do what is called hindu squats, 2. you do what is called hindu pushups, and 3. you do a lot of bridging. The squats will give you an amazing leg workout as well as a decent cardio workout. The hindu pushups are very similar to divebomber pushups and will also work the entire body. The thing about the bridging is that it will give you an amazing stetch throughout your body and especially your back and neck. I will type out a more descriptive explaination of the exercises and will post them tomorrow. If you can't wait, I am positive you can find a video on these exercises somewhere on the web. I consider myself to be in very good shape and I could only do 50 hindu squats 25 hindu pushups, and hold my bridge for less than 30 seconds when I first started doing these. Best of all, you don't need anything except an explaination of the exercises to get started. About giving advice, Korea is a big country, so maybe you could be a little more specific to where you are heading. And like I said before, if you come to Seoul you are more than welcome to train at your gym. My teacher is a christian (methodist) with schools both in Seoul and in Incheon. http://www.sangmookwan.com/ If you come to the Yong-In area I know a good school where you can practice Taekkyeon. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ Dutch HKD Federation http://www.sangmookwan.com/ SangMooKwan International Training Center Korea --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Klaas Barends Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2005 20:17:01 +0900 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Blending, muscles, getting close Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > i see that your limited exposure to Hapkido was indeed very very > limited---we dont/arent supposed to use muscle in HKD. just as in > aikido you > join with and add to your opponents energy...using muscle will just > get you > fatigued and possibly injured. >> I wish you all the best in your 'Combat Hapkido' study. A little test. Walk up to a light student (60 kilos or something). With your arms stretched right in front of you, and your hands under his/her armpits, try to lift him (keep your arms straight). Pretty difficult, if not impossible, isn't it. Now walk up to a somewhat heavier student (about 1.5x your weight, maybe more). Grab him with both arms around his body, and lift him. Hey, it's easier than lifting the light student. Can you imagine how easy it would be to lift the light student like this? The lesson learned: getting close means, you have to use less muscle power. And by 'hugging' the guy, I am kind of blending in, right? :-) -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ Dutch HKD Federation http://www.sangmookwan.com/ SangMooKwan International Training Center Korea --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Todd Miller" To: Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2005 08:14:40 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Congrats to Master Oulundsen Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I wanted to congratulate my friend and instructor Bill Oulundsen for his promotion to Master, 7th Dan. He is the first person promoted to the rank by Grandmaster KS Hwang, his instructor for 30 years. The test was well attended by current and past students. He performed several patterns with incredible power and good technique. He did a number of lightning fast self defense techniques. (Hats off to Matt Hunter for surviving as his victim) But his board breaking was the most impressive. He did a one board (10x12) speed finger tip break, four board speed inner knife hand strike (as always no spacers), a jump spin reverse crescent kick with the board above head height, a four board checking kick and a three board reverse knife hand strike. Not bad for a 43 year old. Tom Metzner Congratulations to Master Oulundsen. He is a true Mudoin. Many years ago I saw him break 3 boards with a spear hand and I see he is still at it. Again well deserved. The Missionary Position Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >How so? Were that the case none of the world's major (and minor) religions >would have any followers. Same can be said for martial arts. Most >'followers' of TKD/HKD/TSD/etc probably feel that their art has some >element(s) that will benefit others, thus they witness to others on what >they've found. My point is that the techniques of KMA (Sul) have evolved through various means but the philosophies, ethics and morality of same (Do) have come from Buddhism, Taoism etc. The fact that these philosophies and moralities are common to ALL religions, not just the Eastern ones which had a direct influence during the foundation of the arts, means that the morality of Christianity is or should be already present in any Korean martial art. And that was true before the birth of JC. Christianity therefore has nothing new to offer. If your martial art is whole and not just a means of fighting or ego-boosting, it should already contain a very strong moral code. Christianity does not have the exclusive rights to good character! This surely is one reason why so many innocent people have died 'in the name of religion'. I am reminded of the story told by Grandmaster West at the 1st Hanmudo seminar I attended in 1986 in Baton Rouge. He told of the mountain, so large in circumference that the many people climbing it were so far apart that they were totally unaware of each other. As they get nearer the summit they get closer until at the very peak they find themselves in the same place and looking at the same view. GM West related this to martial artists but the same story could equally be applied to different religions. There can only be one ultimate truth! Martial arts is a wonderful way to practice the discipline of our beliefs and train in leadership. No person can tell another to keep what they do in life, that is inherantly good, such as martial arts out of their life. Another Christian should not be telling another that the discipline of martial arts should not be used in the mission field as a possible way to lead people to Christ. Martial arts has always been involved with religion. There is no reason the Christians shouldn't also be allowed to use it in the mission field. Matter of fact I have a Christian martial arts club and I will use it to Glorify God in whatever purpose it is biblically appropriate according to God. Sorry others don't see it the same way but regardless, I will continue. Well, that relation does have a VERY long history regardless of how strong or weak the relation is in some minds. Far longer than the fairly recent adoption of the moral and ethical aspects found in the '-do' arts. As just one example consider the Knights Templar, Christian warrior monks that were formed c1000 AD. Were the martial arts (aka warrior arts) not important to these religious warriors? I'd say that religion (Jew, Christian, etc) and martial arts have a truely ancient relationship going back thousands of years, wrt the Christian religion to ~330 AD. Like it or not, approve of it or not, it is one of the few ancient aspects of the arts that we can verify.
