It just seems many times on the DD that rather than help each other out, or answer questions one might have, everyone waits ready to POUNCE upon things they disagree with. It's not just Christian things, but everything. TEHre are many that offer sound good advice, and to them, hats off. But, there are others on the list that everytime someone asks a question, they jump in with "That's not Hapkido", "you aren't a "REAL" Korean MA practitioner", "Pa Sa Ryu" isn't good Korean arts, "We don't like Bruce", We don't like Craig, and on and on. Gets tiring after a while. That was the motive for my "why I bothered" comment. I should have expected questions about things other than what I asked. As for the commies, I've been there bro., in the heart of Communism. That is all I can say. daryl --------------------------------- Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 09:52:08 -0400 (EDT) From: "A. You will not have room for anything here anyway. 4) Expect to be able to obtain most of what you need most of the time. 5) Do not expect things to be like they are at home. 6) Do not expect fellow expats to help you based on simply being fellow expats. 7) Do not expect to understand the locals, nor them to understand you ~ especially when you think you do. 8) Do not ask "Why?" It will save you a lot of stress. 9) Do not expect a martial arts heaven. Be prepared to search long and hard for an adequate school. 10) Get a thicker skin. I don't mean that in a mean-spirited way. If the surprise expressed by people who actually live here got you defensive, you will not be able to deal effectively with the culture here. Just kidding!!! I won't deny that Matt has done a lot of good by promoting good old fashioned calisthenics. I would, however, take contention with whether or not his stuff is the "best conditioning drills". You've got 3 years of searching on me, but I would offer some other suggestions. Pavel's stuff is much better. Between buying Furey's overpriced products or Pavel's overpriced products...I pick Pavel. Why? Because Pavel has a good mix of "guts" versus "science". Furey will tell you to do something because "it's good for you". Pavel can tell you the same thing, and give you 18 Soviet studies as to why (and then conk you over the head and tell you to "just do it"). Sorry, but Matt is not much of an S&C academician, and Pavel is obviously well learned on the subject of strength and conditioning. Matt is also stuck in one modality...doing BW cals. According to Matt, lifting weights will cripple you. He's wrong! I can cripple myself with high rep, explosive BW cals as quickly as I can with weights. Believe me...I damn near did it!!! Pavel recommends mixed modalities to include BW exercises, kettlebell movements, barbell movements, gymnastics movements, scientific stretching, etc. Variety is good! Closed thinking (Matt Furey) is bad! Also, Pavel has a good FREE web community following over at the Dragondoor site. You can pick up loads of info over there without dropping a dime. Furey, on the other hand. One more thing, kettlebell/dumbbell snatches beat the dog$h!t out of hindu squats. Crossfit is free. Again, they have a very robust web community that can help someone incorporate this training modality into their lifestyle. And, their newsletter is a lot cheaper than Furey's products. Crossfit has had a huge impact on my training and they've never asked a dime from me. Again, the training is varied and promotes a multi-modal approach (generally, a good idea). >From what I've seen, Juan Carlos Santana's bodyweight stuff is better than Furey's. Again, much more varied, and I like how he incorporates equipment and partner drills. Furey's approach is more "alone in the desert". There's 2 dozen other people and programs I could mention, but I'm short on time. These few came to mind first. Matt Furey is a funny, interesting, and very successful guy. He also puts out products that are useful, and they can definitely improve one's quality of life if applied correctly. BUT, I would HATE to see anyone fall into the trap of following his programs to the exclusion of other stuff. His continual damnation of weight training is not only wrong, but just plain irresponsible. For every "bodybuilding cripple" out there that he uses to tout his position, there's a thousand people walking around who have safely used resistance training of some kind to improve their athleticism and quality of life. Hey...I'm one of 'em! Just offering my two cents. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 11:28:20 -0500 From: "Stovall, Craig" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Of tires and hammers Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just wanted to say that I'm nodding in appreciation of the sledgehammer training on the tires. OLDE SKOOOOOLLLL!!!! The strength move with the sledgehammer is also a grip/wrist strength goodie (just watch that nose). Personally, I think anyone involved in Hapkido (or similar grappling arts) that wants to take their art to the next level should get involved in grip/forearm training. The grip/wrist is so often the point of contact with the opponent, and thus serves as the gateway through which one's power (whether muscular or technical in nature) is delivered. It's a shame if this power is amortized due to a weak grip/wrist. I'd also add that tire throwing is another good movement to consider with the tires. It's a great total body conditioner (GPP), and can aid greatly in the development of rotational and core strength. Good stuff. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Don Ross" To: "dojang_digest" Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 15:51:36 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] self defense #57 apology Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I wish you all the best in your 'Combat Hapkido' study.
