I have been there a number of times and enjoyed each visit. It is a place on my list of sites for the future trip I host for students to visit Korea. One nice thing, it is close to Itaewon, which is one of the popular shopping districts in Seoul, so you can visit both easily. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Guess who's back!!?!?!?!? check out this website: http://www.sulsado.it/ This is the guy I was talking about. He is actually a hapkido guy claiming to be taught "korean ninjutsu". I actually do wonder from a non historical point of view why there is no "korean ninjutsu" as there is a korean version to many arts. Then from a historical point of view, I wonder which korean warriors fought against the japanese soldiers in which ninja were sent to korea? I have only trained with one Combat Hapkido (CH) instructor who himself trained with GM P. My instructor has been around the martial arts for a long time and was a 4th Dan in USCDKA before learning Combat Hapkido. While I have met only a few CH instructors each of them was a long time martial artist before joining CH. Could it be that many of GM P's instructors were fairly well accomplised martial arts before joing CH? I myself left TKD training after 13 years because I too believed the self defense aspect of TKD needed more focus and I wasn't getting what I needed. I started CH as a white belt, after achieving a 2nd Dan in TKD, and believe CH made my TKD more effective in my early days of CH training. Maybe you can agree with me that it is more productive to train someone who has already achieved a black belt from a credible school or organization than to take someone who has no martial arts training. To make a long story short I cannot address the economics of GM P's business but I can see through my instructor the quality of the self defense training GM P has provided him. The bottom line is that while I am a junior in martial arts experience to many on the board I believe I have been around long enough to spot a good program with a good instructor. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Sims" To: Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2005 9:50 AM Subject: [The_Dojang] ICHF Material > Dear Tom: > > "....Please enlighten me on these Combat Hapkido styles you have trained > in that > teach the students to muscle their techniques....." > > For myself I would not say that ICHF actually "teaches" muscling, but that > often > this results because folks who are teaching have not be grounded in sound > principles about how to use their body, how to impact the partners' body > and how to > do these things efficiently and effectively. Of course, it's common knowledge that adults do similar things to heighten the sensation of certain "activities", but this is the first time I've heard of kids doing this as an alternative to drugs. The scary part is that you can't tell when you're about to go under. I was flat out put to sleep by a cross collar choke by a sparring partner last year. I was fighting off the choke, and the next thing I remember is everyone looking at me like I had just died. I had no idea I was even going under. I thought I was fine, and the next thing you know I wake up and wonder where the hell I am. There's certainly no "high" associated with this either before, during, or after. I felt like I had just woken up from a fitful night of sleep. In fact, I sat out the rest of the session because I just didn't feel "all there". I certainly didn't feel good or high. Strange. Bring back the good old days when we just huffed gasoline like civilized people. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Don Kirsch" To: "the_dojang" Date: Tue, 16 Aug 2005 17:13:37 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] Combat HapKiDo ? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Nice posts Bruce and Craig. I agree 100 percent. My mother raised me to not say anything about someone if I couldn't say anything nice and GM west has taught me to not talk bad about other styles and systems of martial arts. With the risk of violating both those lessons I challenge anyone with any knowledge of basic HapKiDo techniques and motion to watch one of Pelligrini's Combat HapKido videos and tell me that his motion or techniques is at the level of a 9th Dan in HapKiDo. Besides from the way I've learned HapKiDo from GM West "Combat HapKiDo" is a redundant term. However, my gut feel is that if I joined any one of his 250 affiliate schools it would be a little "hit or miss" as to the quality of instruction that I received for my dollar...." I can't see going over the whole Pelligrini/"he-said-she-said" Thing. Most of the questions in his regarded have pretty much been answered for me over time---- except for one. And I just plain have never quite been able to get my head around this. I don't think anyone would argue with me that GM Myung has his commercial side. Certainly he does not give his books and tapes away, he charges for his seminars and collects fees for testing and certification. And I won't pretend that between the two of us, there is something of a disconnect over this matter of commerce where I think we have decided to agree to disagree and the Teacher-Student relationship remains. That said, does anyone else find it curious that Pelligrini would not have hung with Myung after being awarded a rank or two to not only have an authentic art to promote but also get some Class A guidance in running a MA business? As it is its seems that JP went ahead and essentially borrowed from other places all the same material that he would have gotten to in the WHF/YMK Hapkido curriculum had he just stuck around. No real point to this. Just musing out loud. FWIW. Best Wishes, Bruce __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
