In hap"ki"do (note: it is not called hapdo). A qualified hapkido teacher will pursue this line of instruction >for the student in time. My pursuit of the ki arts has led me to many qualified teachers on the subject and no one is ever >going to send a jar full of ki to this amazing Randi. There are too many people out there that can con individuals and call what they do "ki". Do I personally believe in "ki"? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. At times I can "feel" ki and I believe others feel it as well, but it that simply suggestion? I have seen people do techniques that they say are Ki but in reality are simply good technique, body alignment, body placement, etc. Or there are cons people use and call what they do "ki demonstrations" which are in fact nothing more than sideshow tricks. >I did not expect this kind of post from you and I was very surprised. Why? I don't necessarily believe nor disbelieve - my opinion bounces around on this topic - but when you hear about people tossing "ki balls" and such. . . . . . That's why if someone can demonstrate ki I would like to have it documented- have the technique shown to be real - not to be some con artist doing something that we just don't understand. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The theory of ki is a working-theory Dear sir ki is a working theory and a lawyer practices law no matter how long he practices law,a doctor practices medicine as long as he hangs his shingle he practices medicine, because as Grand Master West has stated to me more than once'' Iam still learning and evolving in hapkido and do not know all there is to know '' we are all still practicing martial arts and ki. Now as far as names of techniques who cares what we call it,if one guy calls it ikkyo and i call drunker than cootie brown tech, if it works and i can teach it so what it works i dont understand all the hubbub bub. I would rather learn more than argue about the name of the technique just my 2 cents take a penny leave a penny. In May of this year two of our US instructors sponsored a cover article about the head of our kwan, GM Lim Hyun Soo, and Jungki Hapkido. They paid the $5,000 I mentioned. I believe that anybody can approach TKD Times with article proposals, provided they're willing to pay for it. The magazine retains the right to edit the articles, but I don't believe they typically make fundamental changes, unless an article contains blatant falsehoods. "For everyone: I have heard that for a martial artist to appear on the cover of Black Belt or TKD Times, they pay a fee to the magazine. Urban legend or reality? Just wondering." --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Don Kirsch" To: "the_dojang" Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2005 10:06:11 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] 8 Pieces of Brocade and Six Sound Healing Qi Gong Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net As any student who has trained with me will tell you I have been practicing and teaching a version of the "8 Pieces of Silk Brocade" for many years. There are many, many different variations of this set of Qi Gong exercises . I too have a link to a version of these exercises along with some of the history of the patterns at www.texashapkido.com . One clarification I would like to make is the use of sounds in the Qi Gong exercises. The method mentioned using sounds is most likely what is known as the "Six Sound Healing Qi Gong". A specific sound is used to activate a particular meridian along with a movement which simulates that meridian It is a Qi Gong practice which helps in healing the particular functional organ system associated with the sound and movement. A good introduction to this method of Qi Gong can be found in the book "The Way of Qi Gong" by Kenneth S. Cohen. Lets not spin this. Karate or Karate-do is a generic term meaning empty hand method of fighting. We could say boxing is Karate style. Tang Soo Do is the same exact term, although after KJN Hwang Kee adopted the name and many others abandoned it. the Term TSD became known more as a style connected to Hwang Kee KJN. However in reality the term still is the exact same as the term karate. Which is why Hwang Kee adopted the name used by Lee Won Kuk to begin with. Now modern Tang Soo Do Schools refer to TSD as their style, however if they write out the characters and compare them to the characters for Karate it is exactly the same. I have had people tell me they take Karate, and when I ask what style the have told me Tang Soo Do. This is just a lack of understanding. If someone says they take Karate, It would be reasonable to ask "what style" and "what organization" becasue the term karate provides me with neither answer. I beleive everyone here on the DD trains in some form of Karate. JCGet more from the Web. We have some knowledgeable practitioners here, I am not one of them, I'm merely a student. I currently practice judo and tae kwon do. The book by Marc Tedesci on hapkido is a very good resource. He mentions the styles created by In Hyuk Suh, Joo Bang Lee, and some guys. I would like that book in my collection, thats for sure. Karate is a style of Japanese martial arts that you and I and many of those reading this can no doubt easily distinguish.
