I still believe that the stronger foundation you have the better prepared you are when that time comes. For example: when we practice Ho Sin Sool, or Knife defense I see students make small errors in there technique that on the street would mean the technique would not work, however in class or at a demonstration with a willing partner in may appear to work fine. Information is what we see, read, hear or in some way are exsposed to. Knowledge is this information applied over many years so that thought is no longer required to perform the technique. If the information is not sound, then the knowledge is not sound. People end up with a technical ability that looks good on the mat with a willing partner, but gets them killed in the street. My point is the better information (instruction) you receive the better your technique will be. I beleive the best information comes from the source. Once the person has aquired the best available information, then it is up to the individule to practice the information so it will become his knowledge. This is where the confusion is. Is someones skill on the mat, or in the street due to good information, or consistant practice.I think both must be present. It is obvious that consistant practice is a must, skill will not develope with out it, but the other part of the equation is, are you practicing sound principals received from legitamate resources. To practice bad habits can also get you hurt. Two people of equal intellegents, equal strenth, and equal heart, fight. Both have practice cosistantly for 10 years, one with a legitamate source of good sound information, and the other with a less creditable source. Who has the advantage. As a Martial Artist you must seek good instruction (Foundation) and then it is up to the individule to do with that information what is best for them. JC CGet more from the Web. Your stating "Observing a process (or even exploiting a process) and understanding the underlying causes are two different things.", is only reinforcing the point I was trying to make. However, I think sometimes we as martial artist only view Ki or Qi from the martial aspect. My point on using the functional applications of Ki was more intended towards healing arts. As someone who has been educated in physics and math and also acupuncture and Medical Qi Gong I too have difficulty in buying into some of the esoteric, mystical points of view on Ki. My intention of the post was to explain the point of view used in Eastern Medicine . The people who developed concepts of Qi and Ki and practitioners of Medical Qi Gong and Acupuncture don't concern themselves with the underlying cause of "what is Ki", just the functional results. This is a concept that is some what foreign to the western mind and our way of thinking about the universe. Where I really draw the line on Ki and Qi are the "parlor tricks" used by martial artists that they attribute to Ki. jakskru wrote "i use ki every day....to open the door to my house, to start my car, to draw on my neighbors car....". From an Eastern perspective this is all more the truth than you realize. From an Eastern point of view Ki or lack there of is the motive force behind every action or non action we make. This idea is fundamental to understanding some of the theory behind acupuncture, medical Qi Gong, Shiatsu, and herbal treatments. Just some thoughts on a different perspective of the world, Regards, Don Kirsch --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Ruth Hansen" To: Date: Fri, 2 Sep 2005 19:47:27 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Advice Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear B McDonald, I am in a similar situation. I have been at our dojang 3.5 years, and have earned my 1st Dan. However, last year our instructor (whom I really like!) ceased doing business with WTF (ITF?), so there was no certification, although I did get my belt. Now he's giving AKA certificates to us. This feels weird. I do Taekwondo, not Karate. So, now I just train to train. As I'm too old to compete much anymore, I just enjoy the Art. A well trained individual is just that, no matter what paper hangs on the wall. People discover what works and does not work in due time, heck, even prussic acid was supposed to be an "elixer or youth" at one time in the 1800's, but people learn. It has been proven that even ice age people in Europe used forms of this treatment.(read about this in any article concernig the "iceman") I will never forget the first time I went to a Chinese doctor who was trained in traditional Chinese medicine and also is an MD in western medicine. In the inital interview, he asked me why I thought that this treatment would work and I stumbled around for a moment before making my reply. My reply to this gentleman was that he most certainly had a much better grasp of the WHY this might work, I simply knew that people surely would not seek treatment for thousands of years via techniques that are proven NOT to work.
