From what I have personally witnessed over a long span of time, quality control did not seem to be a major concern with WKSA. I have personally failed some of the people I tested at WKSA tests only to find them passing that very same test and receive certification. I am not only talking of skill (which may or may not be subject to personal ability adjustments), I am talking of entire sets of techniques that were "circled out" (meaning the student was not taught that or did not know it). Furthermore, the GM, who is supposed to be in attendance for every black belt test, rarely observes the test. He usually only presides over the promotion ceremony itself. Having said this, I believe Kuk Sool is a great art, and some of the best martial artists I have ever seen practice this art. Some schools in WKSA even have great quality control; however, this is IMHO because of the SCHOOL instructor... not the organization. As I recall, the person who initiated this thread was happy with the instruction he received at the Dojang he was about to leave. His main concern for moving was that this instructor left the org he was affiliated with, and he now cannot issue certification from that organization. IMHO, it is MUCH more important to stick with an instructor who teaches good stuff than it is to move to another instructor just because s/he happens to be affiliated with an organization that provides certification. In the end, what you can do on the mat is much more important than the paper you have hanging on your wall. If your instructor teaches good stuff, has appropriate moral traits of loyalty and ethics you can live with (this means you might need to look into what prompted him to leave the organization), and charges you a reasonable fee for these services... stick with him or her. No amount of politics or paper hanging on your wall can justify leaving a good instructor... they are too hard to find. The owner, having achieved Grandmaster status, did not seem to be directly involved in teaching or running the school, but several teenage boys were handling those tasks. Not one student seemed able to throw a decent sidekick. Two branches of this school have opened up in this city amid whispers of White Belts becoming Black Belts in months time, and new teenage "Black Belts" being encouraged to drop out of school so that they could teach full time. The Grandmaster, probably in his 30's, is a terrific motivational speaker, and when I knew him, had good WTF style TKD skills, as well as some BJJ training. People with little or no Martial Arts background have no idea that this McDojang is just that, and are paying well over the average area tuition of $100 per month to receive watered down, generic training. There are schools like this all over the city....." Yes, and as I have said so many times this condition continues because THATS the way the average Joe wants it. Just look at the other post about Mi Yi Hackworth. Ask yourself "why is she still around in the Hapkido biz?". SOMEBODY is patronizing her school, yes? These McDojo's are very successful because they don't teach MA, but rather sell the ILLUSION of being Martial Artist. People patronize these places because such locations are willing to accept money in place of hard work done on a regular basis. If someone runs a tough school in a secluded area of the country that person can probably get away with hold his students to a higher standard. But if a person has a school in a suburban or urban area, accept it that the average person will go where things, are quicker and easier. Will he get the best information available at your school, or would he be better served to come to you for the answers he needs. The obvious answer is go to the instructor, because at that school he is the best source of relaiable information, or does this mean the instructor is an elitist. Not that the Green belt would intentionally instruct the new student wrong, but his answers don't carry the same reliability as yours do. In Soo Bahk Do, and the Moo Duk Kwan. Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee is the best source of reliable information. The more reliable the information is the stronger foundation (Basic Fundamentals) I will create in my training. Good fundamentals translates to the mat. If I were training in Tae Kwon Do, or Hapkido. I would not go to Grandmaster HC Hwang for instruction because is is not the best source in those disciplines. It is not about elitism, it is about fact. "Practice makes perfect" is not a true statement if what you practice is not correct to begin with. We should all be serching for the best source of information available for the art we choose to study and then dedicate to consistant practice, because consistant practice of bad habits, and incorrect technque only creates a mess. PS: I never liked the Practice makes perfect statement anyway because none of us will ever be perfect, but should all be trying to achieve perfection. JCGet more from the Web. P.S. I used to drive ~90 mins, one way, to train at a "good hapkido school". Point being, look for a good school, not just one next to your house.
