Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am fairly new to Hapkido. This morning in the USKMAF dojang I really did a number on my right wrist. It is one of those injuries that doesnt hurt right away it just seems your wrist gets extremely sore, stiff and feels like it is sprained.I dont even know which technique I did that caused it.Does anyone have any advice on how best to recover.Should I lay off of Hapkido till it heals completely?Should I have gotten ice on it as soon as I felt the soreness stiffness? Is wrist tenderness a common ailment for low ranking colored belts, something that gets better as I condition my wrists?I have prior injuries in the wrists from football, there is something about having ten men land on your wrists in a pile that tends to be bad for them.Would it be best to suck up the pain and continue to train Monday?I know that in TKD sometimes I can have muscle soreness,go on into the dojang, stretch and train, and at the end of class the soreness is gone.I know some of you Hapkido guys have been through this before, a little advice would be greatly appreciated and maybe allow me to know exactly what to do if it occurs again. Now I wonder if I might bother you with a question. I just turned 43 and have some time to go before I can even begin testing for 2nd dan. I don't feel at all slower, I can still kick pretty well, and still do jumping kicks with no problems, but it has been in the back of my mind for some time that the time that I have is growing shorter in regard to retaining those abilities. As someone who has passed, um, 25, and as someone who is active at the highest level of martial arts, I ask you, how long can I expect to do this? I would like to at least get to 3rd Dan, but, again, I am worried about how much time I realistically have left before I have to learn to play shuffle board. I managed to get to Jackson this weekend, to get some mat time in with GM West and his excellent students. The training was outstanding and once again I came away with pain in places I didnt know existed (Thanks John). All the local hotels were booked due to the aftermath of hurracain Katrina. GM West opened his home to me and made me feel as if I was one of his son's coming home on leave. Most of you know of GM West's military back ground and his accomplishments. He continues to support the troops and trains several other military students besides me. We take his valuable lessons and pass them on to other service men and women who are going into harms way. He goes above and beyond in his support for us and not once has he asked for a single dime for his efforts. I have to argue with this old warrior to just to pick up the check at a restaurant. In this soldiers eyes he's one of the finest Americans walking the soil of this great nation of ours. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you Sir. Master Sergeant Roger D. I hadn't had my first cup of coffee yet when I wrote it. But despite that, it doesn't change the meaning or intent of that message of gratitude to GM West. I heard it said that "Those who can't think, fight". Well I'm proud to be a dumb sheep dog. For the good people of this list, thanks for supporting the troops in your way. And to all of my past English teachers, I apologize. Now let me get back on the porch and do my job. However, it follows that seniors are expected to take care of and encourage their juniors. This is where this Confucian Model usually finds itself being abused here in the West. Certainly juniors are often cowed into showing deference, but then the seniors do not take care of their juniors as they should. In fact quite often the seniors exploit the juniors to the seniors own ends. When this occurs the seniors are liable to the loss of their mandate for failing to honor their responsibilities to their juniors. In Western parlance I suppose this would be not unlike the Golden Rule you mentioned. FWIW. This is why I like the Buddhist aspect where an instructor a master or a student all deserve the same respect. To many times a master starts to believe they are better than the beginner, as GM West has quoted on his web site we are all beginners, some of us have just been beginning longer. IM lucky to be friends with my instructor and even with disagreements we laugh about it and move on. IM not Confucian nor am i a Buddhist and not a very good Christian, but as a teacher you need to be a councilor a friend a parent a leader who is open to all his students, eveyone needs to have a safe place to go and someone who's been there done that. if you can find an instructor whom you can be friends with outside of the class room setting consider yourself lucky or as the enlightened say its your destination, and if you find a friend you can marry and spend a lifetime with consider yourself blessed by the hand of God. my point its not enough to study the physical aspects of martial arts you also need to study the philosophy and religion that mold these arts. kurtis carter --__--__-- Message: 12 From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" To: "the_dojang" Date: Sun, 11 Sep 2005 22:19:06 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Mr. Kirsch Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have heard many Hapkido practitioners use the term player. I have watched GM West demonstrate at the Yong Zee tournament years ago. I have nothing bad to say about grandmaster West, but I have to say the term player seems odd to many including me. Grandmaster West said recently here on the DD he remembered my demonstration at that same event, as I was demonstrating self-defense techniques. This is not about the mat, it is a term that some are using to show respect and honor to another. As for me, my kids play baseball, and soccer, but at the Do-Jang I use the term training. I personally don't use the term player, but if you and others do, then I can respect that as your tradition. Second- before you ask anyone to get on the mat, you may want to do some research. I personally know Master McCauley, and he is not often in Dallas, however I am. In fact I was today. If you feel the need to prove yourself. I will be glad to get on the mat, behind the building, in the street or whatever. This is about respect. I respect the fact that you and others use the term "Player" however you are not be realistic if you expect others to understand your use of the term, especially given its connection with other terms like playing games and playing sports. To call someone out is IMHO the wrong approach, maybe it would serve you better to simply explain your position on the subject, and then let it go or debate the facts. I will be visiting Dallas several times over the next couple of weeks, as I am practicing a demo with two YukDaninstructors in the Mesquite area to be presented at the 60th anniversary of the Moo Duk Kwan in Korea October the 2nd. I might like to come to your school and visit. What is the location JCGet more from the Web.
