That said, I'd like to say something about this particular group. My intent is to advise caution, not sling insults. They have decent materials printed in English which are widely available so it is possible to get a good sense of what they have been marketing and are currently marketing prior to getting involved with them. The Dahn Hak group is pretty widely known in Korea. It is less widely known as a cult as most people drop out before getting hooked [like most training pursuits]. A great deal of attention has been paid in developing a training program that makes you happy to relieve yourself of the burden of money. About two years ago, yoga exploded into public awareness here. The increase in yoga centres almost rivals the sudden spread of PC rooms in 97/98 - a truly insane rate of expansion. As an indication of what I mean, there are almost twice as many yoga places within a 10 minute walk from my office than there are dojang of any description. This does not include regular health clubs which include yoga in their memberships. No mention of yoga whatsoever was present in Dahn Hak advertising until this sudden interest in yoga took place. The focus was always on abdominal breathing [danjeon ho-heup]and 'natural martial arts' which one could expect to manifest spontaneously in time of need. Now clearly, using the term yoga is a lot faster and easier than what they were using previously, but still... Scott is an advocate of the "R.O.S.S" system, a former competitive Sambo player, and a highly respected coach. He has some very interesting ideas, but has always struck me as a bit "out there". --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 11:56:54 -0500 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: KO-Online Subject: [The_Dojang] Sparring Training Problem Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Those who don't spar/fight in the dojang contribute justly to those who perceive martial artists as out-of-touch with reality and practicing esoteric useless techniques. The first time a student gets the wind knocked out of them with a well placed kick or punch is the beginning of learning to absorb or roll with the blow. The same strike a month or two into training will no longer drop them. For full-contact practice our beginning students wear hogu and a head gear with an acrylic face plate to acclimate them to having fists flying at their face. High ranking black belts who are used to WTF rules (myself included ) are completely out of their element when we introduce face contact and leg strikes. Sparring allows you to start "reading" attacks. The same kick that will catch a novice off-guard is easily blocked or avoided by someone experienced in sparring because they have seen it so many times before. Many gyms avoid contact sparring because it exposes their flaws or puts their students at risk. Not preparing my students for the realities of combat is the real risk. It is not for everyone, but my female students especially understand the need to overcome the initial shock of being hit or choked from an attack so they can concentrate on surviving. (AP) - Five years into the 21st century, an 1846 anti-dueling law is being used to prosecute two cousins accused of getting in a knife fight. "The 1800s are alive and well in Mount Clemens," joked Dean Alan, who heads the Macomb County prosecutor's office warrants division. It issued warrants Tuesday. Police say the cousins, ages 19 and 31, disagreed Monday over a $30 debt. The older man brandished a knife and challenged the younger man to fight outside their Mount Clemens home, and the younger man accepted, said Sheriff Mark Hackel. The teen was stabbed in the stomach. "He could've done any number of things," Hackel said. "He could've called police, he could've fled the area. But he took on the challenge and became part of the problem." A lawyer specializing in criminal defense said he has never represented anyone charged with dueling but said lawyers for both men could use the same strategy -- claiming self-defense. "If it's a mutual fight, it's kind of hard to say it's one guy's fault," said Stephen Rabaut. "And just because you're the injured party, that doesn't mean you were the good guy." --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
