"After all, Korean martial arts were created by a race other than WASP so it would be sheer hypocrisy anyway." I hope no one believes that WASPs are the only race/culture capable of racisim? I no doubt misunderstood the sentence. On another note, have you ever taken a class and the instructors are working with you on a technique, and they speak to each other in Korean/Portugese/Spanish/Farsi, etc. (insert one) and laugh/smirk/knowing-look, etc? How did that make you feel? Brooke --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "martialscience64" To: Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 17:47:08 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Jye in Georgia? Greg Hindley --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 17:17:31 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] thoughts on mudo Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> (Although I missed who wrote the original post I am quoting above, as I did not receive that issue of the DD, it did get my attention and I pray I am not taking it out of context. But as it is...) An interesting school of thought, and a common one, in the past 50 or so years. I competed in full contact competition until 1987. I stopped doing it for several reasons; the main ones being that the rules of engagement in competition conflicted heavily with my hapkido training and attending competition events competed with training events (not to mention the politics of competition). Sparring in hapkido can be VERY dangerous (as I have witnessed at the Daehan Kidowhe) and is not necessary to the application of hapkido technique in actual self-defense. For me personally, the essence of training in any musul is the ancient time-proven historical practice of technique one on one. The reason is simple; in the few times I have had to use my training, the hands on self-defense training of hapkido was what was useful and saved my life. Many other KMA (besides hapkido) such as archery (was it not the Muye Dobo Tongji that stated that archery was the first musul recognized by the Korean government?) and the many sword arts (ones that do not use a jukdo) do not practice sparring, for obvious reasons. I do not know of any martial art that practices useless esoteric technique. It has been successfully debated, in my opinion, that in the sword arts the techniques can be used with any extended weapon and I have witnessed the application of taichi techniques. Others may prefer to emphasize the art side of the martial arts. There is also honor and dignity in that. The techniques in hapkido, for example, have been proven in actual combat and it is a complete art itself with it’s own signatures. The first term in ‘martial arts’ is martial or military and this is our legacy. There is nothing wrong with competition, if the techniques in your martial art can be applied to a competition. It is a fallacy to imply that it is a necessity. Many martial arts have no basis for sparring or sporting events and many common modern martial arts evolved around competition instead of self-defense. But that does not imply that they have no application in self-defense. I have even heard mudoin over the years state that if you are not practicing a ki art or if you are practicing forms, you are not practicing a true martial art, while I do not believe this, it just showed us that there are always two sides to every coin. [Jye, If you ever get the opportunity check out the Journal of Asian Martial Arts Volume 12 # 4-2003. The article is called Ancient Military Manuals and Their Relation To Modern Korean Martial Arts. The article is about twenty pages and its obvious that much work went into it. I know you can order it on line at www.goviamedia.com or maybe find it used, or if you ever get out to Syracuse or a tournament in NYC (there is one this Sat in Hoboken, NJ) I'll give you a copy of the article. Tae Kwon Do was my first style of martial art. My last and best TKD instructor was David Meggs aka Mokurai in Albuquerque,NM, (www.silentthundercenter.org). He is the real deal. He teaches Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, and Yang style Tai Chi. The combination of Internal and External martial arts are awesome. ] --------------------------------- Yahoo! for Good Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 16:41:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] WHat If.... This type of behavior doesn't go along with any of the teachings of the martial arts. I would consult the master and see if he is aware of it. It's sad that people just don't take the time to get to know other types of people. Different isn't bad...I think someone said that they don't understand how racism can take place in the martial arts. I think their reason for thinking that was because most MA are taught from asian culture. But my thing is, one can study asian culture and hate another, you know? Like a latino could study japanese karate and hate blacks...that's very possible. But I think we need to realize what racism is....to me it's a detachment from a race of people. By detachment I mean a person is detached from accurate info about the race and clings to stereotypes, and other negative things. But if they put their walls down and take the time to meet greet and break bread (fellowship) they'll see that we're all people many times with the same goals in life.
