As a first dan, I studied Koryo, the Taeguk forms, and a form called Ship Soo, which I have been unable to find on the internet. Now, at 2nd dan, I have learned Keum Gang, and my current form is the sword form in question, called "Il Gum". Is that enough information to help? My next form is going to be a knife form, but I have no idea what its name is, then will be more well-known forms: Jin Tae, then Right Hand Staff form, Nahanchi Cho Dan, Bung Sul Il Jang, and, lastly, Bai Sai So. Thanks, Sheree Goldstein 2nd dan, instructor, WTF TKD ------------------------------------------ hi sheree, actually, no, thats not enough :). what might be going on is that your instructor has added in sword curriculum and simply named the form il gum or "first sword". without knowing from what style he is drawing his sword form, it would be hard to know how to help you find references for the form. it appears he may be combining korean and japanese styles (bassai and naihanchi). nothing wrong with that. can just be confusing for students if they dont know from whence it came. have fun, melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy _www.cjmaa.com_ (http://www.cjmaa.com/) 1.573.673.2769 Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply _www.cjmas.com_ (http://www.cjmas.com/) 1.877.847.4072 --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" To: "the_dojang" Date: Sat, 15 Oct 2005 10:49:30 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Dan Bon Records Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Duane The Dan Bon Records are not available online, or anywhere else as far as I know. Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee's personal log of Dan numbers is now in NJ with Kwan Jang Nim HC Hwang. Until 2002 they were in Korea, where Hwang Kee logged all new dan numbers personally. In the early days some people tried to destroy the books to cause confusion among the ranks during the Tae Kwon Do movement. Others have left the Moo Duk Kwan and created there own Dan number systems, however the original logs of Hwang Kee are still being added to by the president of the Moo Duk Kwan beginning with number 1 and now in the 45,000's. I have seen the actual books, but they are now in digital form at the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan headquarters. I have some information about number 38 Master JJ Kim that you may be interested in prior to his leaving Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim after he was appointed to spread the Moo Duk Kwan in the USA. My book I began my book several years ago. I started with a format I could use, then added in all the numbers I knew to be true. Then I would ask others around the Moo Duk Kwan for there number, and their instructors number. Over the years I have found lists from Ko Dan Ja testings, and other outlets of information. Some coming from very senior Moo Duk Kwan members both nationally and internationally. Mr. Richard Wilcox in Hawaii Dan #19500 has also created a similar book. He and I have compared books to insure accuracy. While researching different things over the years, I have called headquarters to verify information from the original books. I don't think just anyone can do this, I have a personal relationship with the executive administrator for headquarters, he is a 6th dan #20631 that trained in East Texas prior to moving to New Jersey. My book is not complete, but has many years of research, and approx. 10,000 names and dan numbers logged. if I can help you with a number I will be glad to look. Thanks JCGet more from the Web. In the early days some people tried to > destroy the books to cause confusion among the ranks during the Tae Kwon Do > movement. In my research on the MDK family I have heard that there were some "errors" in the dan bon records circa 1959. i.e. people that were tested and passed by Hwang Kee were not recorded or their records were lost or later deleted. Something along those lines. Might this correlate with your statement above? Just curious... The sword form on it is different. Ship Soo is very similar, but I guess we do it differently, as well. I'm open for other suggestions, though I just about know the form at this point (on the surface, of course). I started training in 1989 in WTF, have most recently trained in ITF, but currently train independently 'cause I found an instructor I liked and felt the instructor and learning were more important than the brand naming (ITF or WTF). He quite ITF because of the paperwork and politics also...don't know if it's right or wrong, but I figure if I'm learning, it's a good thing!!!
