I have always leaned more toward the ITF teachings because they are more self defense based and less competitive sport based.I watched a WTF sparring match the other day.The gentlemen were sparring hands down,I couldnt get over that. How can you spar someone hands down?It looked like a good way to develop bad habits and get hit on the street if you were ever caught in a self defense situation. I was told that the errors were corrected using the hard copies of the certificates issued by Hwang Kee, and the error did not effect that many numbers. I can tell you that there are some numbers through the book that are reserved an have never been issued to anyone. These numbers are used for transfer students. For example my instructor transferred into the Moo Duk Kwan after his instructor died. His instructor Master Chu, Kyo Song (John) Dan number 2200 taught under the name Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan. When he died my instructor began a search for a new instructor. During his Moo Duk Kwan research found who was then Hwang, Sa Bom Nim (HC Hwang). My instructor joined the Moo Duk Kwan as an e-Dan and was issued dan number 20632. This was a reserved number that allowed him to join the ranks as the most junior e-dan at that time. Most transfers do not retain there rank this way, however some do depending on there background. We later found out that Master Chu, had taught under the name Tae Kwon Do in order to obtain a visa to leave Korea in the 1960's. He continued under that name for fear that if anyone found out he was teaching under the name Tang Soo, or Soo bahk he would not be allowed to return to Korea to visit his family due to the political pressures on Hwang Kee and the Moo Duk Kwan at the time. Master Chu had many schools around Texas. After his death (My instructor) Master Kris Poole of Longview ---Master Ted Smith of Tyler, Texas ---and Master Phillip Duncan of Henderson, Texas (Executive Administrator for the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Fed. Inc. created a Flag and an association in his memory called the KSC Memorial Association. This Flag and a picture of Master Chu still hangs in my Do-Jang in honor of my roots. Another of his students Jack Yoder of Longview, Texas researched Tae Kwon Do after Master Chu's death. He later joined the ATA. One of his students Master Sam Phumjunkton now runs that school which is one of the largest TKD schools in Longview, but we come from the same roots. I though you find this interesting. That people actually like the idea of > having their students learn bad habits by trying to make a technique work > before they have learned the proper way to execute and apply it? > no, i wasnt...i was just trying to find out opinions on what works best....i have witnessed two theories of teaching technique and both have their respective good and bad points...so in the interests of learning and knowledge i was hoping that maybe a few people would take the time to offer their opinions on the subject. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
