There are people I know that believe they have come from the "McDojang" style of Hapkido classes and at the black belt rank now suddenly realize it. They have seen the real thing and are now embarrassed to find they don't hold even some of the basic tenets of Hapkido. I myself have seen "players" at some of the most popular hoe downs and feel somewhat inadequate and lacking. How then, can I convince them to attend the seminars such as GM West's Spring show - without feeling lost or without feeling that their 4 or 5 years of training seems like a waste of their time. What words of encouragement can you offer to allay their fears - are there exercises to assist them in preparing for the events - should they talk to the sponsors of these events - how as instructors, can you make them feel more at peace with what they will be shown. Their interest and desire is there but there is no where to start over. Thank-you With respect: Tim _________________________________________________________________ Take advantage of powerful junk e-mail filters built on patented Microsoft® SmartScreen Technology. http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-ca&page=byoa/prem&xAPID=1994&DI=1034&SU=http://hotmail.com/enca&HL=Market_MSNIS_Taglines Start enjoying all the benefits of MSN® Premium right now and get the first two months FREE*. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Braeswood Martial Arts" To: Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 07:02:55 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Dr. Kimm's Jackson Seminar Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net A great time was had by all! This was my first seminar with Dr. Kimm and I am looking forward to the next one. I wish him luck and safe journey's on his travels over the next few weeks. I would like to thank GM West for hosting this great weekend and for all his hospitality. My students and I had a great trip and the Mom whom traveled with us enjoyed her stay as well. It was great to see (and roll on the floor with) old friends as well as meeting new ones. Looking forward to seeing you all in the spring. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi all, I am trying to find some drills to be used to increase foot speed and reaction times when sparring. I was thinking of some plyometric exercises, but I can't find any on the web. Could someone give me a hand? Thanks, Erik Brann --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 11:24:49 -0500 From: aburrese@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Hard-Won Wisdom Going back to Paladin Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hey everyone, If you don't have a copy of Hard-Won Wisdom yet, or need one for a Christmas present, there are only a few copies left of the current edition through iUniverse. The book is in the process of going back with Paladin Press, the original publisher. So it will have its third cover. :-) I have a few copies of the iUniverse edition left, and once they are gone, that's it. Then I'll have the new Paladin editions when they are again selling them. And no, the book is not changing. Content is the same. Book by me, Foreword by Marc MacYoung. And I am also finally back to work on Attack Back. It has taken a while since the Apprentice book ordeal last spring. I'll be sending out proposals this month and next, and then will see who will be publishing it. Contact me privately if you are interested. West to learn a different take on what I've practiced,, I go visit Ji Han Jae to learn his Hapkido,, I go to visit Master Hal Whalen to get a new fix on his Hapkido....I go visit Master Rick Nabors to learn his take on Hapkido...plus eat his wife's food, which is unbelievable... If you go to these places to learn and have fun I don't think anyone will think ill of anyone....you only get thought bad of at these events if your idea of training is to lean against the wall with your new uniform on or go and then leave early from the training after having never really learned anything and then show up on the message boards talking bad about the training and the people at the even. This is not Hapkido or leadership. Some people want to be leaders in the Hapkido world through their talking and theorizing...but Hapkido is like any other activity in life....people respect and follow leaders that are doing what you are doing....Ji Han Jae leads from the mat in his 70's....J.Rl West leads from the mat,, Hal Whalen and Rick Nabors lead from the Mat...what a novel idea right??? When I go and get the opportunity to train with Master Mike McCarty it is all about the mat time....mat time is your friend and the more you have of it the less all the other stuff matters.....you learn on the mat....get on the mat at seminars and don't think this is who I am and what I know....open your mind and let the sweat come out of your pores and you'll get that funny Hapkido smile on your face and the world will be good.....screw the belts, orgs., and BS....just train with everyone and learn.....and then people will feel your a real Hapkido player...but you know what...if you do this all the time then it doesn't matter what they think now does it??? Because you will have absolutely nothing to hide!!! We use bungee cords wrapped around our hand rails and do punches and kicks away from the rail. This seems to speed up our hand and foot speed. The best reaction time improvement I've come across was to defend against a long weapon. To many people try to Americanize it into a bussiness. Instructors carter to students so they will not leave the school or talk bad about the school. My advise is this. Come to America and get a real job. Teach becasue you love the martial arts. If you are good enough, it may become a sourse of income for you. It may be enough for you to make a living. Don't dilute, or water down your school to make the bussiness work. I know of two schools within 30 miles of me with 300 plus students in them. The Black Belts can't fight out of a wet paper sack, but the instructors are doing well finacially. For those schools it is about recreation, fun for the kids, and money. I have about 100 active students, for me it is about the art. I teach very hard, and in a way I believe will strenghten the character of the students and the art, as well as leave my students with a realistic understanding about thier ability to defend themselves. If they don't like the strict, hardcore methods, there are other schools. JCGet more from the Web.
