In some areas however, It has taken it's toll. I am 68 years of age, have developing arthritis, several non-related martial arts injuries & several surgeries in past three years. As a result of a collapsed ladder, I fell to the concrete injuring both of my shoulders & breaking my arm. Both of my shoulders had to be rebuilt to include extensive physical therapy. My mother passed away a month ago, and I have a physically handicapped older brother to continue providing care for. There comes a time in every career, when a person must decide if it is his/her time to retire and allow the younger/stronger teachers to continue your work. I have made that decision to retire from the martial arts, and I have chosen a most worthy and highly skilled technical martial arts expert to inherit Martial Arts USA. Dr. Larry Beard who is a Professor at Jacksonville University at Jacksonville, Alabama will assume all responsibility for Martial Arts USA. He is very knowledgeable of Yudo, Jujitsu, Karate and Yusool. Dr. Beard holds the rank of 8th Dan in Yudo/Judo. A new webpage is still under construction, but should be completed soon. You can see the web (still under construction) at: _www.martialartsusa.com_ (http://www.martialartsusa.com) All future contact, comments, questions, should be addressed to Professor Beard at that address. Please be advised; All current and Life Memberships will be honored as such for the duration of Professor Beard's martial arts life. At his retirement or death, MAUSA will be passed on again to his choice of the most qualified person. There were a number of MAUSA Life Members that were qualified to take the reins of MAUSA. However, I had to determine who among those qualified would have the time & energy to devote to MAUSA, with complete assurance that MAUSA would continue growth and moving forward for years to come! That choice was Professor Larry Beard. Please give Professor Beard the same professional courtesy and cooperation that you have always given to me. If he was not the best choice to fill this position, then I would have made a different choice. Give him the chance to prove his trust and direction is honorable and in the best interest of MAUSA. If you doubt his technical skills, go play with him on the mat! I still have a couple of current certification matters pending, and will follow through on these, at the appropriate time. It has been a great honor to be associated with all MAUSA members, and to all the wonderful Masters & Grandmasters that I have been associate with over the years. There are no finer people on the face of the earth than those who are deeply committed to the Martial Arts, regardless of style or affiliation. I pray that God will bless and keep each of you healthy and safe for as long as you live. I will miss and think of you for as long as I live. Signing off. Professor John E. To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Those clips your referring to are from my school. The IHF under GM Jang, Young-Shil. A lot of those clips from our webpage are old clips from the early 90's in Korea. Those clips show more larger circle techniques, because they are demo's. So more action with the attacks are shown. This does not represent how the techniques are actually done. But for demonstrations it's better to show larger movements so the audience can see what's going on. If you do everything full power, and tight circles no one can see what's going on. And the whole point of doing a demo is for people to see the art, not to show off technique. As far as effectiveness, I can assure you what we teach is very effective. GM Jang started teaching Hapkido in 1960. He began his studies under Ji, and later became a student of Myung Jae-Nam in 1964. Through the late 60's, early 70's he was considered Myung's number one student. So I can assure his techniques are vicous, altough he has slowed down in his age. I am trying to sponsor GM Jang over to my school in VA next year. Anyone is more than welcome to attend. If there are any other questions regarding what we do, or the video clips, please let me know. But speculations, can be withdrawn. Our group here in the tundra of North Dakota/Minnesota/Wisconsin has always used gloves because we punch more than the sport enthusiast do. The introduction of gloves hopefully means the WTF will be encouraging points for punching. As an equipment wholesaler it scares me to have to consider changing stock & maybe even (gulp) have to carry the "colored dobuk" the WTF is considering... shudder. As a sport Taekwondo must breakaway from the boring low angle kickfest it has turned into. Once again as an anachronism we have held onto the " one point body, two point head" system here in the north. I welcome the proposal to add another point for spinning technique to display skill beyond just a low angle kick. For the fighters it will demand more ability and a better show for the crowd. The additional point for knocking down an opponent has changed some of the thinking for those who just play tag. The technique will be "flashy" but for the sport side that is a plus.
