However I do think that there is a misunderstanding about the role of Pain in the Hapkido Arts--- or maybe I should call it "pain management", yes? When I am working with a partner I know that pain is a sign that something is not quite right so its the natural thing to work to avoid pain. Now, the way that we study the Hapkido arts where I teach, the techniques are done so as to break or strain or spain the body and this will include quite a bit of discomfort on the road to accomplishing this goal. So here is the way that we deal with it. My partner and I learn to tolerate a certain level of discomfort. Each of us has an "ace-in-the-hole" which is, at the last minute, jumping with the technique to alleviate the pain. But this is a last resort. My partner is not "throwing" me, and I don't want to get in the habit of just jumping each time he does the technique. I should feel "compelled" to jump, right? If we are working together well, my partner ought to be able to really whip the technique on me as hard as he wants to and I, if needing to, can jump with the technique at the last second to save my joint. Let me also say that when people don't train in this way, the first time they feel resistance from a person in actual combat, they will stop the technique. I have seen this over and over again in class. A person pauses the technique for some reason and the person DOING the technique stops dead in his tracks. To me this is like the fabled "pulling punches" in Karate and TKD and goes a long way toward explaining why some people think that the Hapkido arts might let them down in an actual fight. Thoughts? Comments? At last month's meeting of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, two applications for recognition as the national organisation for the sport were considered. They were from TNZ and the New Zealand Taekwondo Federation. The committee recommended to the taekwondo world body that TNZ become the sport's officially recognised organisation in New Zealand. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Richard Tomlinson" To: Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 18:20:51 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] back again! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Here I am back on my previous providor after three months... I have really missed this digest and hope what I missed will somewhere down the line be repeated! I am sure the topic I will introduce may not be what is current, but what has happened in these last months has spurred this of several questions. Ok, loyality, to a school, traditional martial art, to a Korean Grand Master, what is loyality concerning the three, what is loyality to a traditional martial art... in this modern world, and if one has a Korean Grand Master, what is the loyality to a Grand Master in a non traditional world.
