I have student's that have come over from ATA school's, and they all have similar story's. And even after paying the extra money to learn more tech's. etc. They are not taught them properly. They don't seem to work on basic's, just push them fast to test, and get that money. I have a friend that runs a large ATA school, and even he dosn't agree with some of the ATA business policy's, but, he likes the money!!  Even after paying for the B.B. club, you have to join the masters club to learn the B.B. stuff. There are also levels above the masters club, that you must pay for of course. He say's the ATA caters to people who wan't to pay the money, and say they are in TAE KWON-DO, but do not wan't to sweat, and work at it to much. And the majority of people seem to wan't that these day's. So i must add, that of course, there are schools out there that are just as bad, that are not with the ATA, even some that are ran by Korean grandmasters. There are some good schools, and instructors in the ATA.The good one's are over shadowed by the bad one's. I guess, it's the old saying, were are all judged by the company we keep! The sparring by black belts was just awful. Lots of knee crashing and retreat. And pooped out within such a very short time, like first round. Great drill #1, knee ups. Moving foreward on ball of foot alternating knee ups. Then doubles, placing the knee which is up back down behind standing foot. Work up to multiples of 6, then to 10 going back and forth across the dojang. So start with one, go to two ect. Increase height of knees and speed. Benifits are better kicks, faster kicks and endurance, strength and balance. With a partner, do a round house without completing the kick, go to pivot and hold kicking position, a partner holds the position of the leg to their middle for a second and lightly pushes away. Repeate in sets of 25. Better round house and faster, hip strength and endurance, this one is really good for us old folks with aging hip syndrome! But realisticly, if one attends an hour class three times a week only, or even 4 to 5, is it enough? If someone is really serious about sparring, they need an outside corriculum of drills like these, running, and leg strength activities such as moderate weight bearing. As far as the physics of movement, yes, martial artists have understood their bodies and movements from learning how to use them. I mean, how did they know that a very slight movement of the foot could create such speed and power in a technique, or even the turning of the hip and how the body must be in proper alignment for technique to occur. These were not modern times. Sorry about the venting but it was upsetting to see such fumbled low quality sparring. I just hope it isnt a common thing! I guess I worry sparring is taken too lightly? Well 3 1/2 hours of shoveling snow today has helped to calm the savage beast. As far as the age thing, well, working sparring drills are great and light contact is good.... and I certianly understand sparring those you trust... we heal alot slower and break easier. But being older makes you smarter, leading your opponent around the ring and controling the situation because one knows more of what they are doing. PS my email reads richard, thats my hubby, I'm a girl. :) --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
