By definition, this is a discipline, and a means of self defense, exercise and learning. I think most of us would agree with this Craig. But there's a lot of lip service given to these ideals and not as many exemplars of such behavior as we might like, right? Chuck Sears wrote: >The original post on bullshido was from someone who spent maybe two months in an ATA school. From those two months, he makes the blind assumption that all ATA schools are the same. Well, two months is long enough to get a pretty good idea of a school, I think. And his experience is not so blind, because we've seen that same story repeated many times. I've got to say Chuck, that I've never seen an ATA school that's different. ATA is well-organized and has an easily recognized brand style, and that means that one ATA school looks a lot like the next. Chuck also wrote: >The problem was not that it was an ATA school. The problem was that it was a martial arts school, any style, using the MASS business model. IMNSHO, MASS is a business model better aimed at used car lots rather than martial arts schools. Most of what it advocates is unethical. I've got to agree with the sentiment here, and certainly the ATA doesn't have the monopoly on this problem. But what does "MASS" stand for? Are you talking about the NAPMA business model? It kind of sounds like you are. Black belt club, Masters' club, etc. That reminds me of a really funny trademark I saw once up in Canada. It was for a place called "The Black Belt Factory." Seriously. I was truly amazed. But typically, forms, one-steps, point sparring. Two month testing cycles are the norm. A few schools, as I did for years before I left, taught head to toe sparring, locks, sweeps, takedowns, actual weapons and weapon defense. But when I say few, I mean few and were "old school" as I was called. I was often the guy asked to come teach a seminar at schools because I taught "street TKD". Most can conduct a testing of 50-100 students in an hour. Many have people who are certified instructors with less than 5-6 years of training, and I'm being generous with their time in training. Padded weapons are used in both classes and tournaments, and most "state" and "world" champions (a whole 'nother conversation) have never picked up a real weapon. Suffice it to say that it is now Baby Black Belts in terms of time in the art teaching to others who will become Baby Black Belts. Mr. Sears The MASS system is promoted most heavily by Master Clark (another Florida issue for folks on the DD) one of the highest ranking members of the ATA. You call it unethical. What does that then say about the ATA? Mr. Sears, I know of you and how you run your school in a completely different manner than most ATA schools. But you must admit that the majority of ATA schools and clubs now follow a different,, and lesser path.
