But what does "MASS" stand for? Are >you talking about the NAPMA business model? It kind of sounds like you >are. Black belt club, Masters' club, etc. That reminds me of a really >funny trademark I saw once up in Canada. It was for a place called "The >Black Belt Factory." Seriously. I was truly amazed. > > > MASS is Martial Arts Success System. More on this below. Dante James said: >Mr. Sears >The MASS system is promoted most heavily by Master Clark (another Florida issue for folks on the DD) one of the highest ranking members of the ATA. You call it unethical. What does that then say about the ATA? Mr. Sears, I know of you and how you run your school in a completely different manner than most ATA schools. But you must admit that the majority of ATA schools and clubs now follow a different,, and lesser path. Peace > Don't get me started - I'll get the soapbox out. :-) Actually, the fact that Master Clark developed MASS is a very sore spot with me. Yes, it is a business model, and as such instructors are free to choose or reject it. But the very nature of the model shows the issue that ATA is having with creeping McDojangism. I'm very sorry to see what is happening to the ATA. I sometimes feel like I'm out in one of the lifeboats watching the Titanic start to go under. I know I can't stop it; all I can do is try to survive and keep the good aspects of the organization alive and teach them the way we used to. Believe me, there have been times when I've thought seriously about tossing in the towel, implementing block teaching and doing everything according to the MASS model. I'd probably have 250-300 students in my school by this time next year. It sure would make my life easier. I wouldn't lay awake at night wondering how the hell I'm going to pay the rent next month. I'd just lie awake at night because my conscience wouldn't let me sleep. I fully and completely agree with the concept that a professional martial artist should be able to make a comfortable living by teaching. But where's the balance point? Where does it change from running a good school to running a belt mill? For me personally, it would be at about 120 students. If I had that many, I'd be quite satisfied. If I had more, I'd start to feel that I was just running bodies through. Everything would be impersonal and I probably wouldn't know the names of most of my students. And that's just not right in my book. But there are folks out there with schools that have 200+ students and they turn out fine martial artists, so there is no "magic number" that fits everyone. Well, will you look at that! That durn soapbox snuck up on my again. :-) My $0.02 worth..... --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Wed, 14 Dec 2005 05:28:30 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] Doju-nim in Europe Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Forwarding... Dear friends: This year in the A.E.S.M.H. (Asociaci=F3n Espa=F1ola de Sin Moo Hapkido) we have intended to bring to Spain to the Doju-nim Ji Han Jae for June 10, this it is since a special year the Master it completes their "70 Anniversary" and we think that it is a moment for the meeting and their European students' encounter with the GrandMaster, like you know in it U.S.A. they prepare a similar event for October of 2006, but to move there is very expensive for us and we believe that it is better to bring it. Our conversations with Doju-nim they are with the intention that it is only one day with us so that it is a Grand Seminar and everybody participates, Doju-nim he told us that he would like to be more days in Europe but for us it is not possible more days, we promised him to comment it with all you for if it interested you that we made a "European Tour" and the Master could be this way in several countries, it would be less expensive distributing in price flight ticket. I have contacted the Master J=FCrg Ziegler "European Head Master" (asiatop@compuserve.com) for if he wants to coordinate it, but we fight against the time, the more time passes in taking out the most expensive "flight ticket" it will be and more difficult of coordinating it. If some of you is interested in this to contact with me or with the Master Ziegler urgently, I need a clear answer before final of January !! In the event of not having answer we will try to bring to Doju-nim to Spain in any way and we will celebrate a Course of one day, at night there will be in "DINNER GALA" that will take place inside the "SPANISH HAPKIDO GALA & NATIONAL AWARD 2006 & HOMAGE 70th. ANIVERSARY OF DOJU-NIM" that we organize every year in Spain. We wait your answer as soon as possible and if it is not possible we wait for you in Spain in June of the 2006. The conditioning of the martial arts will certainly take the weight off of you. Being new, no one will expect you to know anything about the art. In time you will learn and perfect your moves. Give it time. Challenge yourself to train hard for 6 months and then look back at the progress that you made.
