Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "We should all do it for the arts." Yeah, right, whatever. Tell that to my kids when we can’t afford college just so I don’t get labeled by other "real" martial artists as a sell out, McDojang, or Bullshido. Better yet, how about I work a full time career and teach 4-5 nights a week so my children can grow up with basically an absentee father? 10 years from now I might get to ask questions like: What, my kids are hanging with the wrong crowd? What do you mean my wife found comfort in another man? I guess I shoulda been home more huh? Nah, it was much more important that I’m not a sell out, McDojang, or Bullshido. If anyone should "do it for the art," it should be doctors. Another source of contention is that people seem to scoff at children in martial arts. Listen folks, a little secret for ya, children are going to be in martial arts. Maybe not what you consider "real" martial arts...but you know whata I mean. Would you rather them go to the $150 a month daycare center like we just read about on Bullshido or at least get some real training from a reputable instructor? No, I won’t give a six year old a black belt but what age is old enough? 8? 12? 16? 20? Those saying 16+, how many make a living teaching martial arts? Many times these guys openly chastise the "sell outs" while they work their second job, or live/supplement off their retirement, or live off their wife’s salary, or hope their wife (perhaps x wife) is doing a good job raising their children. Yeah, so glad you "do it for the art." We sit back and point at the supposed sell outs with their nice schools, fancy padding, and pretty uniforms and then the next minute wonder how we’ll make rent, replace the burned out bulbs, afford the next seminar, and how many hours of overtime we’ll have to work at our day job to support "the art." To me, the rub comes in when I see 16-18 year old 1st-4th degrees working the MASS program. The kid is thinking about getting his driver's license for cryin out loud. Personally, I wouldn't cry too much about $120 a month for a professional instructor in a professional facility. Gymnastics, dance, etc can cost more than that and actually give less real life skills. There's a middle ground and it's called charging a fair rate for a fair service. For some, it's $25 a month. For others, it may be many times that. Part of being in business is covering your overhead. Ninth degree teaching out of his garage could teach a whole lot less than 3rd degree teaching in a professional facility. I know it's shocking, but some people WANT to train in a well lit clean facility where the instructors are clean cut and professional. More shocking, some will actually pay extra for that. Enough of my rant. They are obviously not well received in the traditional aikido groups, but they are around. In Houston, one of their shodan (Japanese for chodan) was a student of mine for several years in the early 90's. I believe his group was shodokan (tomiki) aikido if I remember right. Jere R. Until this last September, I did not realize we had praticing members of the Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation in the Phillipines. I met two Masters from that country. They were both very senior by Dan Number, however I do not remember the dan rank. They were were very nice and did a demonstration of Soo Bahk Do as well as a Demonstration of escrima sparing which was impressive. JCGet more from the Web. I have a full time job and teach three classes a night Monday and Thursday. Every other Saturday morning, I alternate with another instructor for five classes. So, I'm that absentee husband and father. Don't get me wrong, I love teaching, I love my students, I love my family and I love my wife but, these thoughts cross my mind all the time. I mentioned this to another instructor once and he said; "The fact that it bugs you, tells me that you're a good father and husband." I thanked him for his encouragement and took the family roller skating. I continually try to make things more family oriented at home. As my sons get older and they grow apart to become young men, we've had to make special efforts to do things together, other than martial arts. That is, where they don't call me: Sir. Master Gordon, thank you for the reminder and helping me to re-double my efforts. Try to make water your primary beverage. Eliminate soda and fruit juices as much as possible. I like milk for the cheap protein, but most folks with weight issues should cut back. 2. Make breakfast your primary meal. If you don't eat a big healthy breakfast then don't ask anything else about health and fitness because you're frankly wasting everybody's time. I prefer to eat a hot protein breakfast everyday...mostly bacon and eggs with some fruit or toast to occasionally break the monotony. 3. Most people eat no breakfast, have chips for lunch, and then hit a buffet for supper. You should reverse that. Eat a huge breakfast, a reasonable lunch, and only a light supper to satiate evening hunger and help you sleep. 4. If it comes in a box, bag, or wrapper you probably shouldn't eat it. 5. If you're going to eat bread at least eat whole wheat. It is nutritionally dense compared to white bread so at least you're getting some dietary value. 6. The potato is the devil. Just trust me. 7. 'Bigger, Faster, Stronger' has the world's simplest nutrition program that any teenager can follow. Don't eat chips, candy, donuts, and French Fries and don't drink soda. 8. Eliminate sugar as much as possible. 9. Don't eat bread after 5:00. Keep all carbs at night to a minimum. Try to get some meat in the evening. Your body builds muscle when you sleep, so you gotta give a brother some protein to work with. 10. Go into a grocery store. See the stuff around the perimeter? The meats, the fruits, the fresh vegetables? This stuff is GOOOOOOD. Eat it. See the stuff on the shelves? The bread, the macaroni and cheese, the muffins, the cheese sauces? This stuff is BAAAAAAD. Don't eat it. 11. People your age shouldn't be hanging around crack houses. Consider all fast food restaurants a "crack house". 12. Eat foods that are anabolic (promote lean tissue formation). Eggs, almonds, salmon, yogurt, lean beef, drink water, "high grade" oatmeal (not that sugary flavored crap they sell at Wal-Mart), blueberries, and apples. 13. I like chicken too. Yard Bird is one of the Lord's greatest gifts, IMO. Just take the skin off of it and bake it (don't fry if you can help). Now, from my prior post you may think I'm just messing with you. The fact is that I wish someone had drilled into me at 14 what I just gave you. Then again I already knew everything at 14 so I probably wouldn't have listened anyway. Let me know what you think. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "ISA Headquarters" To: Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2005 18:14:53 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: MTA? The patch for the MTA looked exactly the same as the current ATA patch. The only difference was an "M" for an "A". " Rick, If I remember right, when H.U. Lee came here he went straight to Nebraska. The only MTA I remember is James Benko out of Michigan. I found this on the web: What was the original name of the ATA? - When Eternal Grand Master Lee started teaching in 1966 in Omaha, Nebraska, he formed the Midwest Karate Federation. It grew to such a point that it was renamed the American Taekwondo Association in 1969. @ http://www.greenbaytaekwondo.com/questions.html Respectfully, George I. How true is this? What's the relation between Kee and Benko?? It would be nice to hear from someone who is actually IN the present-ITA and get the scoop. When I was associated with the ITA, it was nearly impossible to speak with anyone in the organization. It was like they were a secret clan of sorts.. If it is true and GM Benko still teaches the traditional Chang-Hon patterns of Gen. Choi, then you mean that Hwang Kee also taught the Chang-Hon patterns as well, and then later invented his own "Song Ahm" hyungs?? IMHO, GM Benko taught, and probably still teaches, the original Chang-Hon patterns the way Gen. Choi and his Black Belts created and meant for them to be. The way they were BEFORE changes were made in order to sell more of his encyclopedias and physics professors got their two cents in and convinced him that the Sine Wave was the way to go. But getting on the whole Sine Wave thing is another huge topic.
