The association is supposed to get subventions of E32 000 (US$5 000) per year but the figures have accumulated since the past four years. STAS President Saba Nim Auto Dlamini disclosed the figure during the association's Annual General Meeting (AGM) held last Saturday at the Olympafrica Sports Centre. He said the exact amount to be ushered into their bank account is E128 000. Dlamini said the association has not received its grant due to the changes within the National Olympic Committee (NOC). "However, we have written a letter to the WTF soliciting information on how to access our grant," he said. The president further stated that the year was not good for the taekwondo family due to financial constraints. "This year, we saw the formation of new clubs but it was most unfortunate that most of them have ceased to exist. In the executive committee, we lost the services of two members. The treasurer and a member could not execute their duties the way they had wished due to work, family and academic commitments. The treasurer was not replaced because our term of office was about to expire. However, we replaced the member with Sandile Mchunu," he said. He added that there was a reshuffle in the executive, as Secretary Temangcamane Maseko was substituted by Zandile Sibandze due to academic and family engagements. Dlamini further stated that the association had done all that was planned for the year in its calendar. "We had three successful gradings. We also hosted a senior grading which was conducted by Grand Master Lee in March. We also had three new clubs, which are St. Mark's, Madonsa and Sitsatsaweni. We also successfully staged workshops. Our participation in an international event in Spain was a major success," explained Dlamini. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 11:12:41 -0500 From: aburrese@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: KOREAN MARTIAL ART TITLES Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Gommels, Very good post. You went into a little more depth than I have in the past posting about the same thing. I have on numerous occasions posted that kwanjangnim is not just a martial art term. Funny story, an American who is known as an expert due to his magazine articles, books, and videos one time told me that his definition of kwanjangnim as a grandmaster of martial arts was correct, and that my Korean wife, other Koreans, and I were using the term wrong when we were referring to the owner of the English school we taught at as Kwanjangnim. Sort of lost respect for his work after he insisted that he knew the Korean language better than my Korean wife and other Koreans...... Anyway, thanks for the excellent language post. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I was a bit disconcerted with the post about the meaning of titles as it carried over once again into the area of "Kwan". I wouldn't mind so much but the person providing the post seemed to have a pre-determined conclusion about what the term means. A quick Google took me to an English/Korean dictionary where I entered "kwan" in Han-gul and was given no less than 100 derivations. Most certainly people are welcome to continue to think of a "kwan" as a "gym" or even "a big building". Your choice. However, derivations can also be "an obsession", "an imperative idea" "point of view, "concern" and "matter of concern". I was going to include the Han-gul but couldn't get this e-mail to support it. I suppose it really matters little in the context of a foreign language. However, I wonder if the people killed in the March 1st Movement as they demonstrated against Japanese Occupation knew that they were dying for "a big building" rather than a belief. FWIW. Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2005 01:24:22 +0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Bruce, There is such a thing as a homonym in language. This is where a word with the exact same pronunciation and often spelling. One such example is bank, which can mean an institution where money is kept, or an embankment. There are a multitude of homonyms in Korean. The first I learned was the word "mal," which can mean "language" or "horse." Therefore, the usage of the word "kwan" is completely dependent on the subject of the sentence. For example, most martial art schools are no longer called "dojangs" here in Korea. Rather, they are referred to as "chae-yook-kwans", which implies a gymnasium atmosphere rather than a martial discipline. During his lecture, Choue explained in detail about the processes in which Taekwondo was included in the official program of the 2012 London Olympic Games at the 117th IOC Session in Singapore in July 2005. To help usher in the Taekwondo renaissance, Choue revealed the WTF's plans to increase the number of its member nations from the present 179 to 202 over the next four years, which he said would help raise the number of worldwide Taekwondo population from the current 60 million to over 100 million. Choue also said that the WTF will strengthen its marketing activities, thereby helping expand its assistance to the so-called Taekwondo-developing countries. "We plan to create the so-called 'Taekwondo Corps,' the Korean version of the United States' Peace Corps, to help Taekwondo developing countries," Choue said in his lecture. He also said that the WTF is pushing ahead with a plan to construct a four-year Taekwondo college, called "Taekwondo Academy," in Korea and several other countries around the world to bring up talents with global minds. Choue said the WTF is developing electronic protectors to help ensure fairness in judging at Taekwondo competitions and hopes to introduce the new system during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, if possible. Choue stressed that there are three "faces" of Taekwondo – Taekwondo as a traditional martial art, Taekwondo as an Olympic sport, and Taekwondo as a social sport. "The tradition of Taekwondo as a martial art should be kept and respected for long, but much should be changed constantly about Taekwondo as an Olympic sport," Choue said. On Dec. 8, Choue met with Liu Peng, minister of the General Administrative of Sports of China and president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, to exchange opinions on ways of developing Taekwondo and other sports in the two countries. Liu was quoted as saying to Choue that "China has for now more than 1 million Taekwondo practitioners." Liu also expressed his appreciation to the WTF president for China's winning three gold medals at the past two Olympic Games. China earned one gold medal in the women's Taekwondo division at the 2000 Sydney Olympic and two gold medals in the women's division at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The Beijing lecture is part of the WTF's efforts to promote its reform activities at home and abroad. Choue began his lectures starting with the Suwon campus of Kyung Hee University for Taekwondo leaders and students in Suwon on May 16; followed by lectures at Keimyung University in Daegu on Oct. 31; at Chosun University in Gwangju on Nov. 1; at Gyeongju University on Nov. 28; and at Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan on Nov. 30. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 18:02:19 -0800 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Brazilian Taekwondoist Named Best Athletes of 2005 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Brazilian Taekwondoist Named Best Athletes of 2005 The Brazilian Olympic Committee named taekwondoist Natalia Falavigna and judoka Joao Derly as Best Brazilian Athletes of 2005 at a ceremony held on Dec. 13 at the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro.
