One referring to Tang Dynasty = Chinese, and the second meaning empty. Osensei Funakoshi just changed the Kanji when he moved to Japan proper from Okinawa. So there was no evolution of meaning, just a substitution of one Kanji for another. Just another note on Grandmaster. In Tang Soo Do, the term Kwan Jang Nim is reserved for the head of an organization. My Kwan Jang Nim has used the definition of "head man" to define Kwan Jang Nim. Many people who sustain a minor injury and have signed a waiver will think about it and say to themselves, hey, it was mainly my fault and they will leave it at that. Waivers become worthless when you or your staff actually were negligent. That means that you knew, or as a reasonable person should have known, that an activity or condition was dangerous, and you did nothing to correct it. When we are rolling around on the mat, or punching, kicking and sparring, we are certainly to some degree doing something that we know to be dangerous on some level. Hence, waivers are almost always meaningless in a Martial Art environment, but if it causes one person to think about it and not sue you, it is worth the hassle. That having been said, you should NEVER have an event without a ton of insurance... There are various conotative meanings in the usage of words. I see many people miss these even in English.(given that this is their native tongue). Kudos to Master Simms for putting the matter in the proper perspective. But some of them, who headed relevant bodies, were dogmatic in the operation, preventing it from becoming more popularized,'' said Kim Tae-kyung, president of the Taekwondo New Zealand, in an interview with The Korea Times. ``Our organization has been established to settle the very problem. We are still small in size, but we will do our utmost to nurture the sport in democratic way and become a model for Taekwondo organizations in the world,'' he said. The 54-year-old grandmaster was inaugurated in October, to head Taekwondo New Zealand, founded with the aim of becoming the Oceanic country's new governing body of Taekwondo. The previous governing organization, the New Zealand Taekwondo Federation, was suspended in 1999 due to the``undemocratic'' administration of its founder Lee Jung-nam. After that, the New Zealand Olympic Committee approved the Unification Steering Committee to manage the unifying process of Taekwondo governorship in the country. But, the committee reached an impasse on a number of issues. Kim, one of the members of the committee, led Taekwondo New Zealand to keep this process moving forward and his effort bore fruit in November when the NZOC selected the organization as the new governing body. ``We are at the point where we should start from the beginning. Everything was uncertain so far, but it will change from now on,'' Kim said. ``We will do our best to improve the lots of Taekwondo practitioners in the country and best represent their interests.'' He said there are some 3,000 practitioners in the nation. Kim is visiting Korea this week to seek cooperation from the World Taekwondo Federation and the World Taekwondo Headquarters, or Kukkiwon. ``We want the WTF and Kukkiwon to give much help to our organization. In particular, we will appreciate it if they let us learn the know-how so that we can train New Zealand players for the Olympic Finals,'' he said. Kim began to teach Taekwondo three years after he emigrated to New Zealand in 1994. Having already had a 15 years working experience at a company in Korea, he tried to earn a living in New Zealand by doing business at first. ``I tried out a kind of business, but it didn't work, just being swindled. It was tough days, but I thought it was the price that I should pay for making life in a new country,'' Kim said. He turned to Taekwondo although he hardly ever considered before that he would take up teaching the sport as his main job. ``I have taught Taekwondo since 1974, but I did it as part-time job. There was a main job to do, and I think it was natural,'' he said. ``But that is my main job, now. I was teaching Taekwondo at several schools for Korean children in the beginning, but greater demand for the teaching made me become a full-time Taekwondo master. ``And how would I feel? Of course, I am very proud of it,'' said Kim, adding his two sons and a daughter-in-law also followed him to be Taekwondo masters in New Zealand. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
