Before that there is a 2nd Recommended, then one must wait at least 2 more months to test for Decided. Don't ask me why, I never understood it except for money. There is also a 1st Rec and 1st Decided. Consider it a Pre-test that you have to pay for. You are not considered the actual Dan rank until completion of the "Decided" test. You are correct that the hand position you see is a Jun Bi. Depending on which hand is at the collar, it is either first or second Dan form. You won't find it in the General's book that I am aware of. And the anonymous quote you use I believe is from "Conversations with God, Book One" by Neale Donald Walsch and is one of my favorites Peace Dante Dante J. Shin Ohmy News A month ago Nepalese taekwondo athlete Deepak Bista returned from Korea after a one-month instructor training course saying "I love Korea -- Nepalese contenders can learn a lot from the Korean training style." He found the Korean training style totally different. He says Koreans are very much advanced in taekwondo, so we can learn a lot about taekwondo from them. He had attended the taekwondo instructor-training course for foreigners held in the world taekwondo academy Kukkiwon. Every year numerous Nepalese contenders travel to Korea for different training courses. Nepal's star taekwondo adept Sangina Baidhya (the first Nepali taekwondo athlete to qualify for the Olympics) was also trained in Korea. So Nepal is getting a lot from Korea. Korean coaches also train Nepali athletes in Nepal. Nepalese contenders are now getting training from Korean Coach Kwon Yeong Dal. He has been in Nepal as a coach since 1998, having trained Nepalese teams in every national and international tournament since that time. Nepal was successful in winning 14 gold medals in the 8th South Asian Games, held in Katmandu, and six gold medals in the 9th South Asian Games, held in Pakistan. The Korean coach is also now giving special training to the Nepal police. Nepali taekwondo was established in 1983 with the help of Korean coach Master J.K. Shin, who remained in Nepal as a coach for eight years. Then Master H.C. Oh came to work here for another eight years, and now Mr. Kwon is here as a coach. He is here through the agency of the Korean International Co. Kwon is satisfied with his trainees, saying that if they get the opportunity then they can definitely show their proficiency. Nepalese contenders are also becoming very skilled in taekwondo. Many Nepalese trained by Korean coaches are doing very well in international competition. Some are into taekwondo in the United States, some in Hong Kong, and some are doing very well in Korea also. That's why we can say that Nepal and Korea are becoming fast friends through taekwondo. Nepalese players respect Korean taekwondo and the Korean people very much. Nepalese athletes who have visited Korea tell us that Koreans also are fond of Nepali taekwondo contenders. Nepalese athletes started to go to Korea for training 20 years ago. Korea has helped to produce a lot of good Nepali taekwondo competitors. In the future Nepal will be very glad to join hands with Korea in athletic events, especially in taekwondo. Nepalese authorities are also happy with the cooperation of Korea. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Chet" To: Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 11:48:11 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Head gear suggestion needed Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings from a long time lurker. I need your assistance. My daughter had some cosmetic surgery performed on her ears awhile back. She is healed now but still has some sensitivity in her ear lobes and needs a sparring helmet that doesn't put constant pressure on them. I need to find her a helmet with a large ear cavity in it. I've looked at a lot on the web but it is difficult to gauge from the pictures. Anyone have a suggestion? Check out their official website. www.guardianangels.org Don't know about their training. I think I have an old 'Black Belt' somewhere with an article about the GA's. I'll see if I can dig it up sometime, but I seem to remember that they were a pretty mixed bag. I don't think MA training was a requisite, but it was absolutely mandatory that you own a red beret, black parachute pants, fingerless leather gloves, and at least one feathered earring. All I know is that if I were Emperor of the Universe (which I should be) my first order of business would be to create a time capsule to preserve all remnants of the 1980's machismo pop culture. All of the Guardian Angels would be rounded up and placed into the capsule...along with the entire A-team, Hulk Hogan, digital recordings of Frank Stallone's songs, a director's cut of 'No Retreat, No Surrender', and Geraldo Rivera's mustache. P.S., if you are over the age of 35 then that post should have made you laugh. If not, then you either have no sense of humor, or you were strung out during the 80's on Pop Rocks and New Coke. A Decided rank at black belt means the rank can never be removed unless the person does something illegal or otherwise. On the other hand, a Recommended black belt rank means the person met almost all the criteria, but needs to complete something else. It might be that they broke all their boards except one that took more than 3 tries ... it might be that part of their written material was wrong, it might be they made a mistake in their pattern, it might be their sparing or self defense was not strong enough. For a color belt, a recommended rank is usually made up to a decided rank before the next rank testing. For a black belt, a recommended rank usually will be required to be held for 6 months before trying again for a decided rank. Also, all students under the age of 16 were given "recommended" black belt ranks until they reached 16. Any recommended rank can be taken away if the student drops out of class, or never meets the required criteria. This, of course, was back in the day when testing actually meant something ... meaning no disrespect ... but in some (NOT ALL) TKD circles, testing requirements are no longer required ... it's the $$$ that is required. When I came up through the ranks, either you could complete the required material, or you were NEVER promoted, except maybe an honorary rank for an older person, or someone no longer physically capable of some of the requirements. Hope that helps ...
