Even with about 112K the numbers are still astounding when you add them up. Multiply that number, as a possibility, by the number of member countries. That is a reasonable expectation encompassing current members and furture growth. Impressive number, neh? I am a 23 year retired US Air Force Veteran. I have trained with others in the service who are top quality martial artists. We never talked much about belt ranks or this art is better than that art. We got on the mats, sweated, bleed, and learned. I never attained any “rank” of significance; however I did learn my fair share of Kung-Fu, Shotokan, Ju-jitsu, and some others. When I retired, my son (15 years old) and I began looking for a school to train at. As we looked at the schools in our town I found most school owner/operators began the conversation with “I”. “I did this or that.”… “I developed this style.” “I will change you life.” To be honest I was not impressed or encouraged until we walked into Moberly Martial Arts (a member of the World Yong Wha Ryu Association). The conversations were about “we”. “We will help you train.” “We will help you over come physical limitations.” (In my case bad knees). They are more about the art than the sale or self. The leader of the association, Grandmaster Han has spent hours talking with me, a lowly green belt, about more than just MA. We, the members of the association, work together, play together, laugh together, and cry together. We are a community, but more than that we are family. And yes, for all Master levels! The entire time you are there you are evaluated, from the first line up until the final evaluation, eight days later; it is ... a unique martial art experience. Not only is it a test of material you are required to know but it is a test of character first. At least that was my personal perspective when I completed the Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa last year. Another point of interest to some may be ... every Ko Dan Ja testing since December 1983 has followed this format, prior to that, the evaluations were conducted during Regional testing events. This particular approach to testing to the Master level in the Soo Bahk DoT art Moo Duk KwanT style increases the amount of standardization throughout the Moo Duk KwanT style world wide. The Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa is now conducted not only in the United States but in countries like Argentina, Mexico, in Europe and in Korea. They all follow the 8 day model started in the U.S., sponsored by the U.S. SBDMDK FederationR Inc., established in 1983 by our Founder, the late Hwang Kee. His son, the legitimate successor to the Moo Duk KwanT style and present Kwan Jang Nim H.C. Hwang (also last year's Black Belt Magazine's Man of the Year) continues the Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa tradition on an annual basis around the world. Here's a quote from an article in the July 2004 issue of Tae Kwon Do Times, "Potential masters must successfully complete an eight-day examination that tests not only the physical aspects of the art but also the character of each candidate" (by Greg Ryman, Editor in Chief, Tae Kwon Do Times, July 2004, Vol. 24, No. 4, issue 140), from the article, "Ko Dan Ja, Eight-Days to Master" (Copyright 2004, by Tri-Mount Publications Inc., All rights reserved.) I hope this provides additional insight and a reference for follow up to the Soo Bahk DoT art Moo Duk KwanT style Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa experience. Congratulations to all the invited candidates, empty your cup! We will be there with you in spirit during your Ko Dan Ja, Soo Bahk! Is this a test that one goes thru at 4th Dan, and again at 5th Dan, and again at 6th Dan, 7th Dan, etc? Yes sir you are correct through 7th Dan. I only know of four 8th Dans and they have served the art for as much as 50 years. The sleep deprivation during my most recent Ko Dan Ja experience was provided for by none other than Master J.C. Cox (who made the first posting on this subject). He serenaded the group in his room with his sonorous Texan snoring. Or perhaps he was just practicing his Ki Haps. On the serious side, A kodanja candidate will participate in obtaining a higher understanding of EVERY aspect of our Art. From basics, to how to design and teach an informative class. The instructors, led by H.C. Hwang, Kwan Jang nim seem to be with you 24/7 (or 8 as in this case) correcting, assisting, answering questions and showing the way. A candidate does walk (limp or stagger) away from this experience as a changed person. At least the guy in my sandals did. Cox Sa Bom Nim, I hope to see you there for the weekend.
