I'm in Delaware but I understand there are a number of other schools in the same area under the same Master Godwin. I notice they use EFC, and I've run into contracts with them before where students were still obligated to pay for the contract even though the dojang went out of business (this was in northern nj and NOT affiliated in any way with the Godwin schools). -- ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning." - Benjamin Franklin ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Beungood8@aol.com Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2006 16:17:28 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re GM Ji/Garland Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In a message dated 1/3/2006 2:18:23 P.M. Seems I remember reading it somewhere other than here. Seems a lot of people are trying to steal Master Ji's name. fisrt Sung Moo Kwan and now Sin Moo. Soon his own name won't be safe. I remember that article in TKDT's. We asked Gm Ji about him and he laughed and shook his head saying crazy Chris. Garland's former Tae Kwon Do instructor, the revered Grandmaster Seoung-Eui Shin, says that he had a falling out with his pupil over his false claims. "I talked to Chris and I said, 'Why do you lie about being a Hapkido master?' And I told him, 'If you continue to do that, then don't come here.' " Shin also says that while Garland is talented, the claim on Garland's website that he made black belt in Tae Kwan Do at the age of 7 is false. "Every time a story comes out, people call me," the soft-spoken Shin says from his office in Bellevue. "Most of his stories aren't quite right." I clicked on his site and he has clips there saying he was asked to go on a top secret mission to Iraq? Anyone know anything about that? He also bills himself as the American Samurai kind of makes me laugh seeing he is a Korean Martial Artist. I couldn't find anything on googol though.. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Interesting. What is the test $$ cost of this eight day event? Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com That's a good question, the cost varies depending on where you basically live and the distance you have to travel. Most of the cost is for lodging and food, training material (there is a student workbook) and travel costs. So... let's see (I had to) 8 days of sleep deprivation - pretty much free, they dish it out all the time. 8 days of personal physical exhaustion, especially my knees - free, the ice was free too. 8 days of personal mental exhaustion - free, unless you mentally shut down, recovery could cost... 8 days of internal spiritual growth - free 8 days of individualized character development - free, whether you like it or not. 8 days of leadership training - free, and you will like it. 8 days of food, lodging, travel costs, and testing fees - around $1500 or more 8 days of the finest martial arts training - that's free too... even when it feels like it will never stop! Facing Kwan Jang Nim H.C. Hwang and senior Ko Dan Ja during the final evaluation demonstration knowing it's all over but the crying... PRICELESS! McCauley and Cox Sa Bom Nim, wish I could make it for the weekend, hopefully next year. Please pass on our best wishes from all of us in Region 2. Soo Bahk! Is this a test that one goes thru at 4th Dan, and again at 5th Dan, and again at 6th Dan, 7th Dan, etc? Yes sir you are correct through 7th Dan. I only know of four 8th Dans and they have served the art for as much as 50 years. The sleep deprivation during my most recent Ko Dan Ja experience was provided for by none other than Master J.C. Cox (who made the first posting on this subject). He serenaded the group in his room with his sonorous Texan snoring. Or perhaps he was just practicing his Ki Haps. On the serious side, A kodanja candidate will participate in obtaining a higher understanding of EVERY aspect of our Art. From basics, to how to design and teach an informative class. The instructors, led by H.C. Hwang, Kwan Jang nim seem to be with you 24/7 (or 8 as in this case) correcting, assisting, answering questions and showing the way. A candidate does walk (limp or stagger) away from this experience as a changed person. At least the guy in my sandals did. Cox Sa Bom Nim, I hope to see you there for the weekend. As long as you get what you pay for! On another note, folks here have mentioned that they know of masters with phony rank. I know of a guy that came from Korea in 1989 as a 4th dan. 9 months later he was sporting a kukkiwon approved 9th dan. Man oh man his test must have been real tough for him to skip ranks 5-8!!!!!! MD Solaiman Sikder, chief of Bangladesh ITF, came to Nepal to do homework for this Committee and also for homework for organising South Asian ITF Taekwondo Championship. He claimed ITF is real martial art that's why he was attracted to ITF game and was busy in efforts to develop this game. He had travelled to Delhi before Kathmandu for his mission. He said that Nepal ITF has well management quality so that they are planning to organise South Asian level tournament in Nepal. He is also hopeful that ITF Taekwondo would also be included at Beijing Olympics 2008. He accused Bangladesh's WTF officials for hindering the growth of ITF Taekwondo. He is hopeful to see the development of ITF in Bangladesh as well because of popularity of this game in rural areas as well as engagement of ladies in this game, despite religious restrictions. " Muslim girl can also play the game well and become famous," he said about religious restriction. WTF is also planning to organise South Asian tournament so that ITF official are also preparing to change the tournament name. He also said that South Korea, origin of WTF Taekwondo, is economically superior to North Korea, origion of ITF. He also said WTF taekwondo became popular in Asia after Seoul Olympics, 1988. He said that ITF is popular in Europe and Northern America. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2006 18:53:32 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] Yushen Lai's 9th Annual Invitational Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Yushen Lai's 9th Annual Invitational Taekwondo Chip Saturday, February 18, 2006 Torodome Gym California State University - Dominguez Hills Carson, CA AMS - Automated Match Scheduling For more info contact 310.212.6010 or www.laitkd.com --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2006 19:03:14 -0800 (PST) From: Bruce Sims To: Ray Terry Subject: [The_Dojang] Huh? But since the matter of Chris Garland has come up again, maybe it would be instructive to know what GM Ji thinks of the behaviors of the guy who reportedly carries rank from him. Thoughts? Bruce, you may be many things but stupid is not one of them. :) You know exactly what that means... Everytime this same topic comes up you seem to want to 'talk', but never 'listen'. A search of the archives will show you making the same arguments and receiving the same advice from your Hapkido seniors. If you don't wish to accept their advice, fine. But don't think just because it comes up again the response you receive will differ. > ... > since the matter of Chris Garland has come up again, > maybe it would be instructive to know what GM Ji > thinks of the behaviors of the guy who reportedly > carries rank from him. Thoughts? I have no idea if Mr. Garland has rank in Sin Moo Hapkido or not. He only seems to claim Jin Jung Kwan Hapkido, so it would seem not. But I honestly do not know or care. His lineage claims are documented at: http://executivemartialarts.net/v5/lineage3.html He claims advanced rank in Taekwondo, but doesn't even spell it correctly, so I remain as confused as ever...
