He was introduced as a 4th dan. He invited many of us to train with him. It wasn't for about 5-6 months that I had a chance to do that. I saw on his wall, a Gold Leaf kukkiwon with the 9th dan written upon it. I e-mailed the kukkiwon and they authenticated his rank! I have no proof of the cost of his fee but "allegedly" this cost him $20,000. This garbage is a lot more common than people know. There have been quite a few Koreans that got promoted "on the airplane" as they came here. Ahhhh, but I don't like to complain! He used to have a lot of mpegs at http://www.jinjungkwan.com/demonstration.htm but they don't seem to be downloading any more. His breaks are not great but his kicks were very cool. Fun to watch. His interview with GM Ji was the only one available on the web so that was useful too. But I think the best thing about the mpegs of him and GM Ji were that they gave one a very good impression of GM Ji. After the bottle breaks, GM Ji went around cleaning up the glass on the mat and checking Chris for cuts, rather than applauding the technique. I loved that! I wish I had trained with GM Ji at some point -- the only time I got to work with him was at the Martial Arts Expo at Chicago some years ago. He seemed like a very caring and dedicated instructor. I went to your website (now saved to favorites) to see the pictures. All that space brings up one question..? How many laps equal a mile? I also saw the pictures from your Christmas parade. Moberly Martial Arts also took part in our town Christmas parade. It was around 22 degrees before the wind chill. All the students dress in white uniforms with layers of clothing underneath, we looked like a platoon of “Michelin Men”. However it was great fun and fellowship. About these so called “masters”; as a pastor I run into people often who tell of an individual who abused their trust while playing the part of the clergy. I believe you understand how difficult it is to gain back their trust. Our situations are not that dissimilar. In another DD someone mentioned that they felt the best course of action would simply to be the best MA and to “raise” a cadre of students that are well informed to shed light on those unscrupulous individuals. Some of these students would then become good MA instructors themselves, thereby widening the circle of truth in MA. I agree, to a point. As with any profession they are going to be lazy, self absorbed, of dishonest individuals that hurt the profession; and those professionals who constantly deliver high quality goods or services will always survive and thrive. Those individuals who do not hold to the standard set by the professional community need to be “outed”. I am not talking about running people out of town, but think about it; how long do substandard business last? A Proactive business, which is involved in educating the community about their goods/services, spreads goodwill and by word of mouth alone could become the local “expert” in that field. Liars and cheats will eventually face the music; we need to make sure we are playing the right tune. Well, that concludes today’s sermon. I had to laugh at that. I looked at the website Ray linked. He is young. He was born the year I put on a white belt and now he outranks me. If all that doesn't set off your BS alarm, nothing will. As one of my students recently said about this subject of false claims (we also talked about the famous boat ranks Sid mentioned): "How people buy all this, go figure...". Jere R. I have had the good fortune to train with him quite a few times and be around him on several occasions and he is a great teacher....he doesn't give you a curriclum sheet..that is up to you to create...but he will show you every technique in Sin Moo with a major amount of detail...and then a crap load of practice on your behalf....that includes major falling and sweating...but ain't that what it's really about in the long run... A lot of people form a perception about him thru the dan ranking stories or he said she said stuff....here is all I know: I have went to train with him many times with no ulterior motives and seeking no rank or anything from him but knowledge and I was welcomed with open arms and he has taught me a ton of Hapkido and philosophy..and all of this is first hand thru him personally..that is the kind of teacher he is...he will pour his knowledge out to you no matter who you are once he sees you are a martial artist wanting to learn..... IMHO there are two distinct types of people I run into when I train in Hapkido....1. those who train for the love of training and learning and all the accolades and rank are secondary... 2. those who don't train that much at all but have all the photo's, certificates, and paperwork of everything they have ever been to in their life as documentation of "being somebody"...unfortunately Ji Han Jae is approached by many of the people in category 2....but that doesn't take away from anything that he has taught me....some of us who train with him for the love of his knowledge just shake our heads and laugh at people who write the articles and claim this or that.....we ALL know who is who and what is what and I can look at someone doing a basic eight technique in Sin Moo Hapkido regardless of their rank and tell if they actually practice Sin Moo or just talk about it... I recommend Mike McCarty and Sean Bradley..I know these guys very well and they know Sin Moo and are all about good Hapkido training....you would have a blast training with Doju Nim Ji at both of their places... And he didn't even use the standard shovel makki technique we all know and love. :) On the stick strikes, let us see them do that when the striker hits with the end of the stick instead of the middle of it. The hiring was announced by Harvey Berkey, chair of the CEO Search Committee and 2006 USAT Board member. Askinas will assume his duties on January 1 and will take over the CEO post from Bob Gambardella who served as an executive on loan from the United States Olympic Committee since 2004. "The CEO Search Committee, including Board members Eric Laurin, Ronda Sweet and myself, and empowered by the incoming Board of USA Taekwondo, did a thorough search of qualified individuals before selecting David Askinas as our new CEO," said Berkey. "The Board unanimously agreed that David has the background and qualifications necessary to lead USA Taekwondo," Berkey added. "We have every confidence he will help USA Taekwondo realize its potential in cementing and enhancing its position as the country's representative within the USOC in developing successful athletes for Olympic and International competition." Most recently, Askinas headed his own sports consulting firm in Tampa, Florida advising clients on matters relating to sports marketing, sports investment opportunities and stadium development. He was also a professor of sports law in the MBA program at Florida Atlantic University. A nationally recognized leader in the sport of soccer, Askinas previously held the positions of Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of United Soccer Leagues in Tampa during the decade of 1995 through 2004. United Soccer Leagues is the largest North American soccer league and serves as the system of minor league soccer in North America. While at United Soccer Leagues, Askinas was instrumental in engineering the transformation of a regional sports league to an international franchise sales business that has grown to over 100 locations throughout North America and the Caribbean. Askinas authored the league's first Standard Player Contract, established the league's grievance procedures and chaired the league's disciplinary arbitration panels. He was the league's liaison with the Canadian Soccer Association and oversaw the league's expansion into Canada by establishing over 13 franchises in Canada during his tenure. He also oversaw the league's television package and worked with the Fox Soccer Channel to create a Game of the Week for United Soccer Leagues. He served on the Board of Directors of the United States Soccer Federation from 1997-2004 and was selected by two presidents to key governance task forces committees in 1998 and 2003 as U.S. Soccer investigated and implemented fundamental changes to their governance structure. Askinas garnered the prestigious President's Award for service to U.S. Soccer in 2001. In 2003 he was nominated by U.S. Soccer and selected by the Court of Arbitration for Sports for International Football (Soccer) Matters as one of the three representative members from the United States. He continues to serve as arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport. "I am tremendously excited to be taking over the leadership of this growing and dynamic organization," Askinas said. "We have an opportunity to make USA Taekwondo the undisputed leader and unified voice for the sport of Taekwondo in the United States. Bob Gambardella and the talented staff at USA Taekwondo have done a terrific job rebuilding this organization. It is our intention to take USA Taekwondo to even greater levels of excellence in the areas of athlete development, membership growth and public awareness. We have a wonderful message that we are going to share with America. Taekwondo is an exciting sport that promotes fitness, discipline, healthy competition and family fun." Askinas is a 1973 graduate of Washington University where he was a member of the college soccer team. He graduated in 1977 with honors from the University of Connecticut School of Law and is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association. He practiced law in Connecticut for many years prior to entering sports management on a full-time basis in 1997. During that time he developed extensive experience in real estate, personal injury, workers' compensation and contract law. In 1993 Askinas became a founding partner of the New York Fever, a professional soccer team headquartered in Westchester County, New York. He served as the team's Corporate Secretary and General Counsel until United Soccer Leagues named him to the position of General Counsel in 1995. He and his wife Karen have three sons, Brett, Kirk and Ryan. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
