I was torn about the Orange Bowl...I didn't know who to root for...the middle linebacker for Florida State (Buster Davis 7) is one of my old students...a real character... and the offensive tackle on the Injured list for Penn State (John Wilson 68)( biggest guy on Penn States team) is also one of my old students...sooooo I just enjoyed an awesome football game...only thing was that triple overtime got me to bed about 1:30 and that was late for an old man getting up at 5 am for work....great game though huh..although I think they should take field goal kickers out of the game of football..both teams play for over 5 hours and then a kicker comes onto the field for 30 seconds to decide the game....kind of like dating a blow up doll..it just doesn't seem right.... A beautiful very upscale area near Monterey, Pebble Beach golf course and the Pacific Ocean, about 90 minutes from where I live. His dojang there was huge. For all those familiar with Master West's school, this place was easily twice that size. In other words, probably too large. I never saw more than ten students in that dojang at any one time. Sad, but true. Later he moved to a smaller, but still rather large location in the Old Town portion of Monterey. When you looked out the window in the men's john you looked into the backyard of the Robert Louis Stevenson House. Stevenson stayed there in the summer of 1879 and it is the setting for Steinbeck's short story entitled How Edith McGillcuddy Met R.L.S. So in other words not really the best location for a dojang. More of a tourist area than a place with a lot of people living nearby. When he left the Monterey dojang he was moved to New Jersey by Ken MacKenzie. Gm Ji told me that Ken was going to build him a brand new dojang. I don't think that ever occurred. The last time I saw Gm Ji in person on the mat was at his dojang in Philly (Elkins Park). It again was a decent size dojang in a local community center. One class I attended and helped him teach had only one student, a younger lady. In short, Gm Ji is really a great instructor and a kind man, yet people just don't seem to take advantage of him and his instruction. And he is an excellent and even fun instructor to be around. He has been taken advantage of by many and no doubt has taken advantage of several himself, esp 'in the day' back in Korea. His choice of school location and layout just hasn't always been the greatest. Gm Ji has make it clear on several occasions that he is getting very tired of teaching. He has been teaching for 50 years now, so one can understand how he might feel that way. Catch him while you can.
