Works for me......you either learn or become very strong, both are good. Rich _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! If they ask again, put them in a timeout box facing the wall and then do one of the most fun class exercises that they really like. They will eat their own liver because they aren't taking part in it. That works a treat. ------------ Message: 7 From: "Gordon" To: Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 09:36:06 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Clock Watchers Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hey all, I've got a couple of kids, one about 10 years and the other 11 years old. One can't tell time very well yet, the other can tell time and is a bit of a mamma's boy. They are both sons of prominent parent students. (Yah, I know, but we all play that game to some point) These young men, one a yellow belt and one a green belt will interrupt class and ask; what time it is, is class over yet, when is class over, how many more minutes until class is over, etc. I think it's one of two things. Either they crave more attention or, they have just learned to tell time and are just showing off their new time telling skills. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Dave Bing Date: Fri, 06 Jan 2006 23:49:05 +0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net that's some priceless stuff there...very cool...thanks for sharing with us J.R..... It's so easy to just tell the parents the kids should quit. Its' the easy way out. Parents bring in kids with the whole range of behavioral problems hoping martial arts training will provide some discipline and order. Even the "normal kids" will test you in small ways. Don't give up on them. Don't give them excessive amounts of attention. Keep the class active so they don't have time to get bored. One hour is a long time for some kids, so consider a 5 minute break at some point to get a drink. Throw in some fun activities. Be consistent. Set rules and stick to them. Clear expectations. If I have a disruptive student they are sent to sit on the side. If the problem is excessive, I get the parent and tell them what happened and remove the child for the remainder of the class and make clear to the child what they need to do for the next class. I have to admit I haven't had any clock watchers. My primary annoyance, - kids who come to class 15 minutes early and then two minutes into class raise their hand and announce they need to go to the bathroom!
