I think I am with those who say it really does no-one any good. I was once offered a promotion up a Dan ranking after training with a high ranking teacher. I and a buddy both said to the teacher that we wanted to learn his methods and syllabus before we took a promotion. I think from that point onward our training accelerated and we were shown some cool stuff and the teacher I think was testing us to see what were were all about. I too have heard some of those things. But your rendition was more informative. Maybe if we want to be rank-blind, these sort of things, if done appropriately and traditionally, are not that big of a deal. I used to get real worked up over things like this, like Bruce....but Mr. Garrison used to tell me the same thing that I have heard you and Mr. West say about it. Last year I typed an article for our ourganizations Newsletter about the state of affairs where I blasted a few individuals. Master Jung, my new instructor confronted me nicely and indicated that we didn't want to portray that image or that we were involved with the negative side of things. We are only worried about what "we" were doing. I kindly told him that I understood and apologized. He was great about it but I've had two great instructors in 23 years tell me that I needed to not be concerned about such things (at least to the point where it effected my blood pressure...it did). So, I decided to take a leap of faith and "assume" that they knew better than I and I have began to come around to that line of thinking. Perhaps I'm growing up. And I don't have a problem admitting that I have a reluctant affilitation to the brotherhood of boat rank because I got my 1st/2nd Dan's through the Kukkiwon in TKD from James Garrison and was a 2nd Dan for about 9 years. I really didn't care and then one day he promoted me to 4th through his organization. I've traveled in a fair amount of TKD circles (although mostly Hapkido and Judo...) and I've never had anybody think twice about my credentials and ability...at least when they were across from me intertwined in an act of "pugilism" Jeff Hindley --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Richard Tomlinson" To: Date: Sun, 8 Jan 2006 20:06:59 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] clock watchin and Tae Kwon Do Dancin!! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net !. Sorry but there has never been a clock watching situation in our schools.... in fact, students, ages 3 to 60, are amaized how fast the time goes, and always have questions about the lesson after the class! As far as Tae Kwon Do Dancing.... say what? This is a traditional martial art, not dance, to lower this art to someone's idea of an aerobic routine, or dance, what an insult. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Dan Chuang" To: Date: Sun, 8 Jan 2006 18:42:31 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] National Collegiate Taekwondo Championships on Feb. 24-25, 2006 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Collegiate Taekwondo Community, On behalf of the MIT Sport Taekwondo Club and the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association, I would like to invite you to the 31st NCTA Championships.
