Tie is wrong. However, here is an interesting note. On one of my Korean language tapes, they say the English and then the Korean. They say Tie Kwon Do for English and then Tae Kwon Do as the correct Korean. As Ray pointed out as well, Hop as in what a rabbit does not Hap as in Happy is the correct sound for Hapkido. There were radio ads here in town a couple years ago for the Combat HKD school in town and they were pronouncing it as hap as in happy. My wife has a big problem with this, since her maiden name is Ham. (Pronounced Hom, not ham like what you have for dinner.) We wanted Cosette's middle name to be Yi-saeng's maiden name because it is important to her family, so we romanized it Hom so she would not get "ham" jokes growing up. If you study the Korean language and how the Korean characters are pronounced it makes it a lot easier when you read the Korean, since the romanization can be different and not accurate. FWIW, I know of instructors, and highly talented instructors mind you, that accepted skip-dan(s) up to Hapkido 7th Dan because they apparently thought that was the way it was done in Korea. But they most likely have assistant instructors or senior students that can. One example... I have a friend that most with a broad knowledge of the martial arts will no doubt have heard of... "Cacoy" Canete of Doce Pares Eskrima, Cebu City, Philippines (and of San Jose, California, in the summer). Grandmaster Cacoy was born August 1919. You do the math. Training 1-on-1 with Cacoy is still possible, and it is a very humbling experience. While he can't fight like he did when he was in his 50s, he will still eat you up when you fight him in very close range. His mobility is rather limited, but his ability to know exactly where you will -try- to put your hand/stick/knife in the next quarter-second is simply amazing. So he teaches what he can and he lets the young bucks demo the other stuff. My first instructor in Judo had been in a car crash and was paralyzed from the neck down. His family would bring him to the dojo and he would coach the class from the side. Yes, I had had classes with him before his accident and he did have students with rank, but still HE taught the class from a wheel chair on the side of the mat. I guess if you want to do it you can do it. Rick Clark >well that is slightly different. They are honing the skills >these guys already have. West for example...he is might I say just a little older than me....BUT I know where he comes from and what his track record is so he instantly has my attention and respect...now from there he can teach me a lot because I KNOW he has been in the game before. He doesn't need to demonstrate a 540 degree spinning back kick to me to teach me how to do it...I respect and trust his teaching and that is what it really is all about.
