I have been going to to Dojang about 5-6  times a week and have drilled on basics again and again, and haven't been getting it. Your right about being hard on myself, I am a perfectionist when it is boiled down the the basics and perhaps it is time to pull away from Taekwondo a little bit and focus on other things. Going to the Dojang twice a week seems like a small amount to me, but you people are right, burning out at a yellow belt level is WAY too fast. Thank you all for your helpful advice. Amcreva ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Open your e-mail without having to worry about viruses with MSN Premium. Think about it for a moment. How are professional athletes taught? Do you think a gymnastics coach, or a basketball or football coach can do what their team members can? As martial arts instructors we must be able demonstrate the basic technique however if we are good teachers we should use other means to demonstrate techniques that we ourselves may not be the best example for. Here's a guide: 1. Explain the technigue, philosophy, targets 2. Demonstrate the technique, either yourself or a gifted student 3. Evaluate the technique explaining the fine points 4. Students practice the technique while the instructor provides guidance Kevin Case Oh Dan --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Wed, 11 Jan 2006 08:53:54 -0500 From: "Boit Clinton Capt AF/DPMP" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Black Belt Motivation Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Through my years marital arts training, I often see black belts get bored when they get black belt Often because they expect to see a lot of new material and be treated like a student once they get their 1st Dan. My opinion is that when a person obtains 1st Dan, they should be more of a leader and the person should be refining the skills they learned as a Gup. (thoughts?!) How do you all keep your motivation up, and/or your black belts motivation up? What types of things do you try to convey and/or teach to your new black belts to keep them going? I would like to hear comments from the hard-core marital artists specifically please. Reminds me of my training with Andrew Dice Clay in Vegas at the Luxor recently. He had a suite up on the top of the Hotel and we knew each other when I ran a bar in Brooklyn. He was from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. He was a young pup perfecting his routines and would stop by my lounge after 2 am. I ran an after hours club with a little gambling in the back room. Lots of Gambino family guys would stop by also. I kept a kitchen in the back and made lots of Lasagna, Pasta, Meatballs, and greasy stuff for the mob guys. Lots of vino too. So, I was recently in Vegas and caught Dice's act. He has slowed down a little. Anyways I had a backstage pass and after the show he took me to a few strip clubs, and other ill reputed places. Lots of hookers, low lifes, and gambler type joints. In fact, when I was at this one club, the bouncers were throwin this one guy out on his head. Tough joint ! Like the old days in Vegas. Then Dice told me he wanted to get back into training and had some equipment in his penthouse including a heavy bag. The next day I am holding the heavy bag and he is hittin it like a limp wristed fag. I figured I had to motivate the guy so I tells him "Diceman...I read the review of your show in the Femi-Lesbo gazette...they panned your show at the Luxor...said you were a homo-phob..." This enraged the DiceMan and he started tearin' into the heavy bag. In fact, after the work out I had to use duct tape to close the cuts in the bag. It reminded me of that scene in Rocky I when Balboa was hitting the hangin' meat in Philly. Also reminded me of the guys Joey "The Clown" used to hang in my club in the basement for not paying the Vigorice on the loans. Tough crowd. The lesson learned here, is like Elvis--you have to be a motivator when training these stars. Cheers, Big Ken "Still alive and still full of Jive." Your crosseyed, bucktoothed, bowlegged, pigeontowed, hunchback with slight drooling problem friend. --------------------------------- Yahoo! Photos Ring in the New Year with Photo Calendars. They don't punch, they don't block, they don't use their upper body at all and when their arms do move, they seem to flap around for balance. Sure they are fast and could probably "tag" me quickly. I hope they train the rest of the art so they are well rounded fighters. I know the excuse is: "This is 'SPORT' Tae Kwon Do.", but in my opinion, it puts a bad face on Tae Kwon Do the "martial art". This makes drills, (when you are overdoing it) a chore and not fun (especially if you are a perfectionist) and a risk for injury. You will find within the next couple of belt levels that your kicks are beginning to "snap" into place and the focus is in line with your targets. Then all of a sudden all of the drills become so much fun, that it is hard to burn out on it. (Unless you do it to the point where your body has no recovery time....this is different for every individual) My suggestion is to cut back a little until you start to feel a significant change in your technique or body movements. (Your instructor will also comment on your technique...so you will know when you are there) Your instructor will begin to ask more of you in class and with the techniques he/she is teaching you, or will ask you to attend an advanced class to start building you up for the upper gup stuff. So relax, cut back a little and enjoy the journey! It is not a race. Best Regards, Brian D. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Forwarding... Greetings, I have a request from the history unit of Wisconsin Public Television to pass to the list. They are working on a documentary collecting the experiences of Wisconsin Korean War veterans. One vet, in talking about the evacuation of Hamhung Christmas, 1950 described a Korean song about the evacuation that he says was sung everywhere. He remembers it describing the separation of a brother and sister, and gave for part of the translated lyrics the line "Through flurries of snow, we headed south..." Any ideas? Many thanks in advance! Scientists at Seoul National University say they fed an extract of kimchi to 13 infected chickens - and a week later 11 of them had started recovering. The researchers said the results were far from scientifically proven and if kimchi did have the effects they observed, it was unclear why. South Koreans are reported to be eating more kimchi as a result of the study. "I'm eating kimchi these days because I've heard in the media that it helps prevent bird flu infections," one man said. Love it or loathe it, once you have eaten it, you will never forget it. Kimchi is made by fermenting cabbage with red peppers, radishes and a lot of garlic and ginger. The idea that it could help poultry to fight off bird flu sounds like a dubious folk remedy. But the theory is being floated by some of Korea's most eminent scientists. "We found that the chickens recovered from bird flu, Newcastle disease and bronchitis. The birds' death rate fell, they were livelier and their stools became normal," said Professor Kang Sa-ouk. Sars link There was an increase in kimchi consumption two years ago, when thousands of people in Asia contracted Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome). Kimchi was reported to have helped to prevent Sars. The claim was never scientifically proven, but according to some Koreans, people in other countries followed their example and started eating kimchi. "After the Sars outbreak, I went to China and I noticed that the Korean restaurants there sold most of the kimchi they'd made that day," a Korean man said. So one of Korea's national specialities may soon find a much bigger market. Whether it really is an effective remedy, only time and more research will tell. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
