Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Someone asked: "Ok, who really wants to be beat up at the age of 50 somehing year old. And who wants at at 50 something want to fight a 25 to 30 year old? And if so, why?" I'm wondering if this is a trick question or a joke. If you want to get beat up or beat someone up or fight anyone at all, I think you have missed the point of true martial arts training. Somedays I think I only came with a 30 yr warranty. I am currently nursing 3 broken ribs. A freak accident but none the less they hurt. Last year I woke up and my knee looked like their was a grapefruit inside of it. Not very painful but was strange. MRI showed a torn lateral ligament. I am still not sure how I did that one. I say hats off to all the older guys that keep it going later in life. It is a shame that they did not mention that Chuck was among the first if not the first, in Houston, to break the old forgotten and lost traditional of not opening a dojang near another one. But they were not worried as the new schools often closed as fast as they opened. The one next to our dojang became an archery shop in 3 months. Chuck only showed up for the grand opening. In addition, his first book was so full of technical errors that a copy was actually used as kindling at a weekend camping training workshop. But he has a great publicity crew! :) On a serious note, congratulations to my dear old (more like ancient) friend Master Rich Hodder on his new dojang, the finest ‘old (re: real) school’ kicking technician I have witnessed or trained with. JRH www.rrhapkido.com Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused his dentist's Novocain shot? He said he wanted to transcend dental medication. I am just turning 45, and the soreness lingers longer than it used to. I've also noticed that when I spar (I am WTF TKD), I injure my metatarsals way more easily than I used to... I've kind of compensated by rolling my foot over ever so slightly and contacting more with a "knife foot" so to speak. I know it's a little goofy, but it does keep the pain down somewhat. Seriously, it sounds like something an "outsider" would ask. I'm sure we've all been asked the infamous, "why do you DO THAT?". Hell if I know...I am who I am, and I am what I do, so how could I do anything else (hey, that's a good song lyric). I guess any 50 year olds out there who like slugging it out with their juniors would just say "because it's a frigging BLAST".>> Very few martial artists will ever lay their skills and heart on the line for real, fortunately. But the human thirst for 'adventure' and competition does not necessarily die out just because one has set off the smoke alarm with that birthday cake sporting 50 [or more -gasp!] candles. Personally, I think that regularly sweating in a dobok may help counter all the follies of youth as we approach the '6-dozen' mark. Commentary from our Elders? Whoohoo! <<>> Yeah, I know what you're saying. I can still do most everything that I ever could, but the "price" to pay for it seems to be higher. I experience much more muscle and joint soreness the day following a workout, as opposed to what it was like 10 years ago. I used to be one of these knuckleheads who refused to swallow any kind of pill out of some macho sense of "I don't need that stuff...I'm not weak", but I now find myself reaching for the ibuprofen after a particularly grueling session on the mats. Inflammation in the shoulders seems to be an issue with me. Thankfully, my knees and back are as strong and healthy as they've ever been. Here's what I suggest to anyone looking to stay active past 30, but particularly anyone involved in MA or combat athletics. 1. Make water your primary beverage. Water is just a miracle substance, and you need a lot of it. I'll put adequate sleep and hydration up against any legal sports supplement any day of the week. Apart from androgenic aids (Vitamin S, the gear, etc), water is the most anabolic thing you can put in your body. 2. Stop trying to "stretch" everything and concentrate more on ROM and joint mobility. I always suggest Pavel's 'Super Joints' as a good text to get started down this road. Your mantra should not be "elongate" but rather "lubricate". Ok...elongation would be cool for certain things, but I'm here to tell ya that those pills they advertise at 3:00 AM are a rip off. Err...or so I'm told. 3. Vitamins and minerals. 4. Fish oil. Flax seed is crap...don't trust it. 5. For males, don't be skeered to try a little Tribulus or something to keep the test levels up. Mama will thank you, too. 6. Work the anaerobic energy pathways at least a couple times a week. Lactic acid is a bitch, but you can build a tolerance in no time. Hey, it's the easiest legal way to increase growth hormone production, and GH is like the ultimate fat burning/muscle building substance in your body. High GH = slow aging. 7. Strengthen and maintain the muscles of the posterior chain. The glutes, the hams, the erectors, the lats. This is where your real strength lies, and everything else goes to pot when the posterior breaks down. Bicep curls will just mean you'll have the biggest set of pipes in the nursing home. "Feel that arm, Mildred! You wanna piece of this candy, toots?". 8. Abs, abs, abs. 9. Friends don't let friends run out of Tylenol. --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2006 07:07:18 -0800 (PST) From: Bruce Sims To: Ray Terry Subject: [The_Dojang] Training Guns and Knives Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "..Our aluminum training guns are two-thirds the >weight of real guns, which allows you to >identify with the weight and feel of a real gun >on your hip and in your hand when practicing >retention and disarming tactics. Indiana Jones said it best “It’s not the years, it’s the mileage.” Retiring after 23 years as an Air Force Security Forces Member (Read Policeman), I have a lot of “mileage”. My son and I started training in KMA when I was 44 and was 16. You can tell the difference in ability, but not heart. My jumping/spinning kicks are not as high/fast as his, but the trade off is mine tend to be more powerful and land more often, due to strategy. I do take longer for me to recover from bruising, but I don’t get many. I know that one day I will need to stop sparring/tournament fighting, but until then as they say in Everybody was Kung-Fu Fighting “here comes the big boys—let’s get it on.” Rob Wood --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
