Mr. Stovall eloquently detailed what I was concerned about in fighting with a jacket on...I too have grappled lots of jacketless opponents and I felt at a disadvantage but hey!...I'm no Gracie!! I would be curious about the street scenario I proposed...assuming that the ground is the last place you want to go in an altercation...and assuming that they opponent doesn't have any friends to jump in...which is the better "equipment"...tear away shirt or non-tear away upper body clothing? Which is more dangerous? Brooke Thomas --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "John Johnson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Hwang Kee, why only two? Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 01:39:58 +0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray, Korean names are normally only three syllables long, as you pointed out. However, there are a few exceptions that allow for the surname (Kim, Lee, Hwang, Choi, etc) plus a monosyllabic given name. These are mostly for male children, however. In seven years of teaching Korean high school, I have also come across two girls with three syllables in their given names. The important thing to understand with Korean names is that they are all based on Hanja, or the Korean use of Chinese characters. The characters have the same meaning in Chinese and in Korea, but are just pronounced differently. Koreans build a name with usually two syllables that has a positive or strong meaning. I believe they hope their children will grow into those names or that the parents know their kids' future personalities. The Chinese habit of giving a girl a masculine name and vice-versa is also done in Korea. Koreans will do this for several reasons, but the most frequent reason I've been told is that the parents wanted a male children and just settled on a boy's name. The girls don't seem to mind since its a fairly common practice. John A. Johnson Seoul, S. But with all the great analysis of the up coming fight on previous posts I'm now interested in seeing this match. What is the date and is it on pay per view? Some Korean martial artists trim their white dobok in black. GM Hwang Kee went back to the cultural issue's of black being associated with death and that which is final. The navy or midnight blue that traditional TSD people wear shows or is to indicate that I still have some room in my mind to learn more. Just because I have dan rank does not mean I know everything, I still have more to learn. That is all I ever heard about it. At least when I entered my first Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do school in 1973 the patch was black background and gold fist, while the dobok was trimmed in m idnight blue. I can remember many Mainiacs (Mainers) walking around with them and when I asked them who they took Tang Soo Do with, they gave me a disgusting look, even after I pointed out their patch said "Tang Soo." It is a fairly generic patch, but you are right, it is in black, not blue. There are very few generic Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan patches out there, one has a white background and sold out of one of the places in CA, perhaps Sang Moo Sa (I can't remember which). (PO Box 110841, Campbell, CA 95011-0841 hint hint) The last patch in Patch Set #8 is the first MDK patch that I recall wearing. The background is midnight blue, trim is gold. You'll also notice a couple more MDK patches in Patch Set #9. The last one in Patch Set #9 is the MDK patch I now use. Other MDK related patches in sets # 5, 6 (the second MDK patch I wore) 21, 23, 27 and probably more that I glossed over.
