Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Folks: I was rather surprised to see the number of posts about what the competitors would wear in the up-coming match. It reminded me of my visit to BULLSHIDO a little while ago. If I remember that experience at all clearly, there seemed to be a lot of talk about shaving the body, body functions and smells, homosexual and homophobic allusions and not a little chest-pounding --- all heavily seasoned with testosterone. What I did NOT see was very much in the way of discussing tactical preferences, strategies, evaluation of technical advantages or disadvantages and so forth. I guess this strikes me as strange as I don't hear Baseball or Football people discussing the nature of team uniforms or their relationship to flatulance. Now and again I hear MMA people complain that they are not getting the respect they deserve from the traditional MA community. However, in defense of the traditionalists, I don't read a whole lot about body functions, sexual preferences or apparel. Don't you think it would be hard for traditionalists to take MMA seriously when the practitioners of MMA don't seem to take themselves seriously? Thoughts? I first learned of Tiger Meditation many years ago from my instructor, GM Dong, Seung Gyoo of Richmond, VA. In Tiger Meditation, the practioner lays on their back with their hands held up above their shoulders with their palms to the ceiling (similar to doing a bench pressing movement). The knees are held directly above the hips with the feet at a 90 degree angle to the thighs. I was instructed that this posture helped with Ki circulation. I have only seen one other martial artist outside GM Dong's system do this type of meditation. It was many years ago, but I believe I saw Dr. He Young Kim doing a very similiar meditation on a HanMuDo video. My question is are there other martial artist familiar with this meditation posture and what have been their experiences with it? U.K. distrib nabs indie martial arts comedy at Sundance by Mark Pollard 2006.01.27 After screening at Sundance's Park City at Midnight program, Jody Hill's martial arts comedy The Foot Fist Way has been picked up for distribution in the U.K. by Momentum Pictures. The Foot Fist Way is a literal translation of tae kwon do and concerns a small-town tae kwon do instructor named Mr. Simmons, who launches into a downward spiral after discovering that his wife has cheated on him. He abuses his loyal students and makes a fool of himself before going on a pilgrimage with his murderous buddy Mike and two of his students to visit his hero, Chuck "The Truck" Wallace. (An amalgam of Chuck Norris and Bill "Superfoot" Wallace perchance?) Along the way, dreams are realized and squashed, and Mr. Simmons must face the greatest challenge of his life. Jody Hill co-wrote, directed, produced, and costarred in the film, which was shot in 19-days in his hometown of Concord, North Carolina. Hill is a nationally ranked third-degree black belt in tae kwon do and has run his own school since the age of 17. All of the cast members including Danny McBride, Mary Jane Bostic, Spencer Moreno, Carlos Lopez, and Ben Best are martial arts students at Hill's school. Best and McBride also contributed to the script. Film Threat has given The Foot Fist Way a short, but enthusiastically positive review, calling it "one of the funniest martial arts movies since They Call Me Bruce." Yes?" I looked at the patches on the two different sites. They are of the "original"version. Han Ja on the Characters TANG for the T'ang Dynasty ( to show the chinese influence) MOO for Military or Martial SOO for "hand" Originally for the Tang Soo Do "Way of the China Hand" Before Gichin Funikoshi changed the Character for Tang and Substituted "empty" the Japanese used the same Kanji characters to describe Karate Do "Way of the China hand" In Funikoshi's wisdom he figured not a good Idea to talk about China to the Emporer at that time in history. The TANG MOO SOO characters are laid out on a scroll to remind us to always be scholars. Thus Warrior- Scholar The Circle around the MOO character to emphasize the Martial Way. The Fist Stands for justice and the whole wreath stands for Peace, With out peace there is no justice and vice versa ( Um and Yang) fourteen leaves on one side of wreath do represent the original 14 provinces of Korea. ( some are now in North Korea) Berries represent the six continents that the Art is taught on. The characters were changed in the last ten or so years to say SOO MOO BAHK to represent the change to Soo Bahk Do with reference to information in the MYDBTJ. Nowhere on the patch is any representation of Tae Kwon Do, completely different Han Ja Characters, except maybe for the Do. There is more, but I'm leaving for vacation, catch up with you in a couple of weeks. Somewhere the midnight blue was changed to black, and I was seeking the symbolism tied to the black color. I wasn't seeking differentiation, I was noting its existence and looking for what the change meant. Thanks for everyone's input. -----Original Message----- From: J R Hilland [mailto:hapkido@wah.midco.net] Sent: Friday, January 27, 2006 12:28 PM To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Patches Very nice Richard.
