In Hanmudo we have 9 such exercises in a lying position then 9 seated and then 9 standing (wa kong, zwa kong and ib kong). Once the acuumulating part is mastered we generally progress to ki movement and then ki application. You can find these exercises photographed and videoed if you get Dr Kimm's Hanmudo Training Manual and videos (from WHA website) although considering the scepticism regarding ki that is I have encountered here, you probably won't want to! As I suspect are a great number of Koreans who operate within an English speaking population. Martial Artist Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I was speaking to one of the masters after a testing and the subject went to the UFC and their like. In that discussion we both felt that to call these practitioners Martial Artist was a misnomer. While they are accomplished fighters, to be sure, they are NOT Martial Artists. They do not exhibit any qualities taught by any respectable dojang. They are not polite, patient, or respectful of others. Personally I believe them to give the Martial Arts community a black eye. I was reading in a Martial Arts magazine how one person questioned is they could continue to watch the reality base programming on MMA due to the language, obscene gestures, ultra inflated egos, and spoiled child tantrums. I say turn it off. Before I am called a prude, I am a retired policeman and have been exposed to unseemly behavior on the streets and in the gutter, where “it” belongs. “It” does not belong in the dojang or attached to the Martial Arts. The sermon is over. IHS, Rob Wood He who ignores disciple comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored. The only thing that "community" is invested in is to unmask every living TMA practitioner as some sort of a fraud, and uphold anyone who's ever driven by a BJJ/MMA club as the grand wizard of martial knowledge. That place is not well moderated, and has a very juvenile agenda. If you're REALLY interested in looking at what a good MMA community can be like then I would suggest Kirik Jenesse's 'MMA.tv'. That used to be a very well moderated site with multiple boards for different subjects. They are also very passionate about the growth and acceptance of the sport, so the flatulence jokes are limited to their own board. I would also steer clear of Sherdog. Not that it's a bad site, but it is definitely a "vet board" as the flavors go and the "noobs" tend to get pounded on over there. To be honest, the public face of the sport is still in need of some work. I mean the UFC's star announcer is Joe Rogan for crying out loud. Joe is smart and very knowledgeable about MMA, but they don't need their spokesman to be a guy who made his bones telling x-rated frat jokes. <<< This is a KMA forum, but I know that Ray has an interest in MMA as it relates to Hapkido arts. Thats good, too. It means that there will be some latitude in raising MMA issues here. Still good. But I wonder, if-- when we have MMA on here--- if the posts couldn't provide more information that would actually educate people here as to what is being talked about. Thoughts? Comments? Anyone? >>> All I can say is that if you're really interested then I will be here to answer any question as intelligently as I can. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Tuan Nguyen" To: Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 10:56:49 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Love the Beating in Santa Fe Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Master Kirsch, Thank you for coming to Santa Fe, TX and giving us an excellent Hapkido lesson. All the participants had a great time hurting each other. I've heard nothing but wonderful feedback and my students are asking me questions like "when are you doing this again?" They are all looking forward to Jackson in a few weeks. What a sick group of individuals!! Special thanks also to Grandmaster Hodder, Master Carolyn Moser, Master Instructor Kenneth Peacock, Master Instructor Chris Pruetz, Mr. Lloyd Martin, Mrs. Joan Gittleman, Mrs. Lawren Hasten, Mr. Tom "Big Galoot" Stanfield, Mr. Ernie Wukash, & Mr. Mark Szafarz for being on the test panel. Your support means so much to me and the students. But most of all I appreciate your honest feedback. Please keep them coming. See you all in Jackson!!! tuan --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 12:42:52 -0500 From: aburrese@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Chinese & Korean Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Remember that Korea used the Chinese characters until the phonetic alphabet Hangul was formed under King Sejong's rule. (1418-1450) Koreans still use the Chinese characters as do the Japanese. However, Koreans don't use them to the extent of the Japanese and Chinese. You can get by in Korea with only knowing the Hangul, while in China and Japan you must know the characters to be literate. Therefore, you will see things in Korea written with the Chinese characters and it is not wrong. A Korean will pronounce them differently than a Japanese person or Chinese person reading the same thing. Aikido and Hapkido are written with the same characters. There are many places in Korea where you will see Hapkido written with the chinese characters as well as the Hangul. I've seen uniforms with the Hangul on the back (Like the ones I wear) and with the Chinese characters on the back. It is not write or wrong, just different ways to write things. For more about King Sejong, you can check out the article I wrote for the Korea Herald: http://www.burrese.com/Personal_Security_&_Self_Defense/Articles/KoreaHeraldArt/king_sejong.htm Yours in Training, Alain www.burrese.com --__--__-- Message: 9 Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 10:21:26 -0800 (PST) From: Wes Heaps To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] re: chinese & korean Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net FYI: What we call "chinese letters" or "charactors" are actually acient asian characters which all the orient used, (like English and olde english) the korean , japanese charactors changed when the governments or dynasties in question changed them. i dont know the actual dates or dynasties off hand, but im sure u can find them. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Each generation a little different, but enough the same so you knew who they were with a glance. I LOVED the comment on the "borrowed Shotokan materials". It is a matter of great sensitivity to the ranking members of their federation. I personally can see where countries in such close proximity could easily exchange techniques if not whole arts, but then I don't have any nationalistic fervor to steer my path. I may end up in the same org some day with Master Cox if the one I'm in does not stop the politics and money grubbing. I do not see so much of this where he is. Do you think that I'm just seeing greener grass on the other side of the fence?
