The filming was done in Korea, but halfway I had to go back to the Netherlands. So there I was, with an unfinished project. What to do??? I decided to give it away for free. I uploaded the file to Google's new video service. Here is the link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5977044692147510906&q=hankido The video contains Jeon Hwan Hwan Sang Do Bup (imaginary techniques with steps. ie. performing the techniques without a partner.) Hankido self defense. (the basic way we practice hankido self-defense) This is a UNFINISHED video. There is no vocal or written instruction. A lot of stuff is still missing. But of course you are welcome to criticize (I expect you guys to do so anyway) My guess would be that people who already practice hankido or those who have seen our first DVD will get a better idea what the second DVD will be about. We do intend to finish the second DVD. We will do the filming in the next two months when master Ko Baek Yong visits the Netherlands. If you are in Europe and are interesting in training with us, just send me an email. When you do a search a http://video.google.com/ for hankido you will find a lot more short movies. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkidoforum.com/ --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 02 Feb 2006 09:00:08 -0500 From: tkdtom To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] new poomsae Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I find it interesting that the Taeguek series of poomsae are the ones still shown in the Kukkiwon web site. In this new generation teens are given more freedom then perhaps the previous generation. Even here, I have female friends who's parents have no idea where they are at 2:00 AM. These teens aren't 18 or 19, but 14 and 15.  They have no problem walking home alone at that time downtown. I think that is insane. Programs and Teacher's perserverence rarely pay off, in places where this type of behavior may not be condoned in the home. (Sometimes it is.) But by the people that the teenager hangs out with help plant the seed of rebellion. What can we do to reach out and help them? We can't.  Some of these kids see sports as something they can't do. That is 'uncool' and their friends would look down on them if they practiced. I think Taekwondo was the best thing that happened to me. My marks are up, I haven't been suspended, Teachers are wondering what has come over me to cause this drastic change. Some thought it was drugs, none thought it was a martial art. I think that Martial Arts have improved my life with the attatude it teaches. Also, I have an awesome instructor who supports all he athletes and care about what happens outside the dojang as much as inside the Dojang. Some teens don't have that support and even if they deny that they need any help, maybe they don't but as long as that support is there, the idea that someone they can look up to and talk to freely. I think is the best thing a teacher or any other person can do. You have scripts written about those types of teachers. Or you have students that get together years after they get out of school and talk about those teachers. You have the ones you hated, and then the ones that really reached out and where there. Now you see teens on a path of self destruction perhaps almost everyday. I'm sure as a high school teacher you also see the teenagers that comes from good homes that practice good habits. You see Teens that comes from neglecting/abusive parents, then you can compare marks and behavior. Most of the time there is a huge difference. I'm not saying all teens act in an odd way, or are rebellious. Just the bad seem to outweigh the good for some people. But, the last thing I want is to walk into a store and have three people have their eyes one me because I'm a teenager who may steal something. If the teen isn't learning good behavior or teachings from home. The 5 tenets are a great way to begin to show them that life isn't about, "I get what I want and I don't care who gets hurt." I may be a pretty low belt compared to the others here. But I think most of you can agree that a martial art and a good, respectable, walks his/her talk, instructor can teach just about anyone the 5 tenets and have the student begin the path of a better existance.   Amcreva ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Enjoy 2GB of inbox storage and 20MB per file attachment with MSN Premium. It is the common sense and passion that you have shown on here in your writing that keeps teachers like me going. Everything you wrote is very true. I work in what would commonly be called an inner city, mixed racial school, and I love it. I go to work everyday and try to set a positive example and NEVER forget how I was when I was a teenager...I wasn't no picnic!! We have informal discussions in my class everyweek about real life and what your choices will do. I let everyone in on my personal life and my students know who I am. I love when students come back and visit me and tell me how things are going. The best compliment I have ever had as a teacher is one of the security personel on campus told me that I had more former students coming back to talk to me on campus than any other teacher he had ever seen. I see so many teachers trying to keep that mental distance from their students. When you do that they just plain don't trust you. Don't get me wrong I don't go for or accept any nonsense and I actually believe a lot of students like and need that. You are very correct in the fact that too many students have too much freedom and no boundaries at home. Boundaries are good they keep you safe and mentally sharp. It is good to hear your words and keep up your training..you can never quit now because no matter what your belt or level...that doesn't matter...you have caught a glimpse of what true martial spirit is....now there is no turning back....you must travel down that road the rest of your life... Grandmaster passed on Wednesday, in Chicago Victim to a heart failure, one of the greatest personalities in the history of fighting died on February 1st in Chicago – his name, Carlson Gracie. According to Dr. Mauricio Consalter, chief of the medical staff who received Carlson at the Lincoln Park Hospital, in Chicago, on Thursday 26, Carlson came to the emergency room at night with about 8 days history of bladder and kidney pain, also alteration of mental status, deep cardiovascular and septic shock on exam, diagnosed with sepsis, generalized infection, a bacteria went to his blood stream from a urinary infection, antibiotics, vasopressors, fluids were given. Carlson was persistently critical, but slowly improved, and on the 31st of January he gave signs of good recovery, his pressure was under control, his heart rate was perfect, he had no fever. But at 6 am Chicago time, his heart slowed down, down, and he went on full cardiopulmonary arrest, he was entubated, cardiac massage provided, but after 40 minutes of no heart activity, was declared dead. Eldest son of Carlos Gracie, the man who brought Jiu-Jitsu to Brazil, Carlson was launched by the family in the challenge against Waldemar Santana, who had defeated uncle Helio in the anthological bout that lasted 3:40h, held in 1955. Six months later, at 21, he would go into the ring in order to avenge the uncle in little less than 40 minutes, in a bout the press depicted as “a massacre.” This would be the first of four fights against Waldemar (two wins, two draws) in Carlson’s record of 19 professional combats, with one loss. After retiring from MMA, Carlson dedicated himself to teaching Jiu-Jitsu, and his team reigned supreme in the tournaments held from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. He raised such black-belts as Sérgio Iris (“Serginho de Niterói”), Cássio Cardoso, Peixotinho, Ricardo de la Riva, Murilo Bustamante, Amaury Bitetti, Ricardo Libório, Zé Mario Sperry and Wallid Ismail, amongst 200 graduates. Controversial, loud talker, always gesticulating. With of an exotic taste that ranged from French music to cockfights, owner of a fantastic memory, master Carlson suffered a tremendous shock in 2000, when his elite fighters left the academy on 414 Figueiredo Magalhaes street, in Copacabana, and assembled Brazilian Top Team, after arguments concerning percentages of the fights’ purses. Some followers, however, stood by the red-belt until the end, like Oswaldo Paquetá, Wallid Ismail and Luis Carlos “Manimal” Matheus. Carlson Gracie’s sudden decease moved the fight community, dismaying followers, rivals and admirers. They all now miss the man who would treat everyone as their son, and despite deserving honors of a hero, would dismiss any sort of blarney with the modesty of a fisherman. All of Carlson’s footsteps in and out of the ring, including his struggle with death, will be detailed in GRACIE Magazine’s 109th issue, a special edition dedicated to the grandmaster. Yun Gang-cheol, a wrestler originally trained in hapkido, will try his hand at the junior heavyweight championship and fight Styles and Daniels in the same ring in a triple-threat match. The event will also feature Gale Kim, an American pro wrestler of Korean descent and a former model. Gale Kim will team up with Mexico's Joseline in a rumble with a Japanese-Mexican duo. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
