Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Is Hankido Aikido??? I don't think so. Although I have little to know experience with aikido (so, please correct me when I make any mistakes) let me share some thoughts. Nobody will argue about the fact that both have a lot of common. And the fact that Myung Jae Nam was the head of the Korean Aikikai for period of time of course adds to this. First I would like to point out, that this is never denied by Myung Jae Nam or the IHF. They have always been very open about the close relationship of the two arts. No stories about learning secret martial arts from grandfathers in hidden caves etc. etc. Also Myung Jae Nam's relationship with Ji Han Jae's organization prior to founding his own organization is never denied. (although both Myung Jae Nam and his older twin brother (Myung Jae Ok) did practice some kind of martial art before coming to Seoul and later Incheon) I personally think that hankido is hapkido inspired by aikido. (but maybe others will argue that it is aikido inspired by hapkido) Before I go any further, I would like to point out that there are many aikido-styles. So at some point I might be generalizing, my apologies. Hapkido and aikido share the same principles of hwa, won and yu, it is just the application that differs. The same principles are applied in hankido, but again their application differs both from traditional hapkido (for whatever that might be) and aikido. Where aikido is known for it non-aggressive approach towards the opponent (just let him come to you, over and over again, until he figures he can't win (yes, this is probably a stereotype) hankido doesn't have this approach. Every technique is finished in of in either a control or by breaking of a limb. Hankido 'only' knows 12 basic self defense techniques. These techniques are taught against a number of different attacks (as you can see on the video). The purpose of these techniques is not as much as learning self defense, the goal is to learn the application of the principles. Once you can apply the principles you could (in theory) defend yourself to every attack thinkable. It is better to practice one technique a thousand times, than to learn a thousand different techniques and practice them only once. Hankido also knows a few aspects which are unique to hankido. A good example are the 12 hwansangdobup techniques which are shown at the beginning of the video. These techniques can be practiced in a sitting, standing and walking (on the video) manner. Roughly speaking, you could look at them as the taichi-part of hankido (yes, I am simplifying things again). There are 12 techniques for the attacker and 12 for the defender. Another unique aspect of hankido are the moo yae do bub. An application of the 12 basic hankido techniques in a dancing form. I have yet to see a aikido practitioner perform a jumping spinning kick (in an aikido setting) but kicks are practiced extensively in hankido schools. So yes, hankido's selfdefense techniques resemble aikido techniques. But that doesn't necessarily mean that hankido is aikido. Hankido travels an other path to the same mountain top. Is hapkido the same as daito ryu jiujitsu??? Maybe some people argue it is, but I would certainly disagree with them. When you go to the homepage of the Dutch HKD Federation (http:// www.hapkido.nl/) or do a search for hankido at video.google.com (http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=hankido) you will get the chance to watch a lot of hankido videomaterial. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkidoforum.com --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 6 Feb 2006 03:55:49 -0800 (PST) From: Giancarlo Fusco Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] new TKD poomsae and the ITF To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Gah! I've been out of the loop for awhile. Is all of this talk conjecture, or has there been something written somewhere regarding new poomse and ITF/WTF merger? Who's involved? How will this merger affect ranking, technique, kwans etc.? Man, you don't read the forums for a year and look what happens... After these several years of working on the new forms why has it taken so long to introduce them? The palgwe and taeguek forms didn't take very long to create and introduce. I sense that they have been waiting to announce this new org with new forms with it all coming together for the first time early September in Seoul. --------------------------------- Brings words and photos together (easily) with PhotoMail - it's free and works with Yahoo! Most of us who fallow the ITF, but are not necessarily members of the ITF, will still be practicing the Chang Hun Ryu patterns. I just don't see the relevance of going from 3 ITF spurs to 2......... The techniques shown are correct for the period. I have a sneaking suspicion that it comes from the Budokan (the British center for Judo), as they have a very nice dojo set up there. But in my opinion the footage is genuine.
