The emphasis will be on the yudanja patterns but I really want to pry & see what I can find out regarding the new forms. If the will spill the beans to a white guy I will let you know whatever I can. I will also be able to spend some time with my Great Grand Master Soon Bae Kim, head of the Chang Moo Kwan & former Head Forms Instructor of the Kukkiwon. He was one of the 4 masters responsible for constructing the original palgwe & yudanja patterns & is one of the many trying to get them to return to a more classical (pinan/heinan) forms. Most of us agree the taeguk are a souless one-dimensional excuse for a form set. I was coming home from my girlfriends house about 2a.m. in the morning in Dayton Ohio...I lived in some older apartments right next to Wright Patterson Air Force Base...on the way home I stopped at a Taco Bell just down the street from my apartment...this area is where the Air Force housing meets the part of Dayton that is not too safe...it's on East Third Street and Airway Road and is still there if anyone is familiar with Dayton...anyway I get out of my truck...head in to Taco Bell and there are two scraggly looking dudes with coats on standing by their old chevy van with the side doors open, just hanging out...I'm the only one in the lot besides them...as I head into Taco Bell they walk towards me and start talking crap...I basically just tried to ignore them and said something to the effect of whatever...as I'm in Taco Bell ordering to go I am keeping an eye on them through the doors cause I had a feeling they were gonna confront me again, I'm the ONLY customer there...a car pulls up in the parking lot and a girl and guy start walking up to the doors...at this point I see the two dudes talking crap to them also but I can't hear it from inside Taco Bell...then I see the guy with the girl start getting aggressive with his gestures towards them and start walking towards them...at this point they all disappear from my line of sight at the counter so I mention this stuff to the people waiting on me...I get my food and head out the door and as I look to my left off towards where they had disappeared these two dudes have the one guy on the ground actually stomping him in the head and he is motionless...his girlfriend is standing away from them and is crying...she looks at me and yells help us...boy what a trip...I just yell over to the guys "hey stop you are gonna kill him", I didn't even head that way...now remember this is before cell phones and 911 calls... when these two guys here me they actually both stop stomping this guy and start walking fast towards me...well at that point you can imagine my pucker factor...when the smallest one gets about eight feet from me he says "so you want some too huh ^&^^%**", and before I could say a word he breaks towards me as he pulls a hunting knife out of a sheath and tries to stab me right in the face, he's holding the knife in an icepick grip....I just remember everything in slow motion from that moment on and grabbed the guys arm and wrist as the knife is coming towards my face...as I was holding on to his hand and wrist he laid the top of my hand open pretty good with the knife...at this time his buddy came up on my right flank and I remember looking at him and thinking, "look for a weapon" he didn't have one in his hands but started punching me in the side of the face and head with his fist,, I remember I was so jacked up with adrenaline that I didn't even really feel it until the next day...I was still holding on to the guys arm with the knife and couldn't let go...boy this sucked bad...well to end the story without sounding like a movie luckily the people inside Taco Bell saw what was going on because as I was waiting for my food I had mentioned to them about the two dirtballs in the parking lot trying to cause trouble they had called the police and a patrol car was actually three businesses down in the parking lot of one of the local strips clubs doing paperwork in his car... I don't want to go thru the details, but suffice to say I was very lucky and had to do what I had to do and I don't feel bad about it at all 1. these guys later were found to be on PCP, 2. they weren't that big or strong. 3. I got several stitches in my hand. 4. the guy with the knife got a dislocated elbow and seperated shoulder and a severely broken cheekbone, 5. the guy punching me got a compound concussion and was unconscious, 6. the guy getting stomped was in the hospital for almost a week with head and back injuries....he got out of the hospital, I got out of the emergency room after the stitches, and those two dudes went to jail after they got out of the hospital...I WAS VERY LUCKY...now in these times I have a cell phone and I would of called 911 and got the police there sooner....there was no macho anything that night...I was like a deer caught in the headlights and that night sucked!! I wouldn't wish that kind of nonsense on anyone...stay safe and when in doubt forget about the burrito supreme and tostada's at two in the morning!!! When a referee is slow to recognize a foul, or when a judge scores incorrectly, their mistakes tend to be highlighted in the media. From a television viewer's point of view, everyone can do a much better job - thanks to slow motion replays and the advantage of having a bird's eye view on practically everything. Such is the pressure these days that it should come as no surprise that the idea of assistance through advancement in technology has been raised. In the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, and the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games, the issue of questionable refereeing and judging in some sports was raised yet again. For a contact sport like taekwondo, it is paramount that such decisions are spot-on. To that end, the World Taekwondo Federation is currently looking into the development of electronic protectors for possible use during competitions. In October 2005, the WTF managed to secure the IOC's commitment in funding the project within the framework of the IF Development Programme. In July 2005, an ad-hoc committee was created to oversee the development of the project. Members of the ad-hoc committee were treated to demonstrations of the electronic head and trunk protectors by various manufacturing companies. The Korea Institute of Sports Science was endorsed to oversee the research and development stage, where researchers reviewed the technology currently available and set about drafting the standard guidelines on the use of the electronic protectors. The WTF received and reviewed the guidelines on the specifications of the electronic protectors between November and December 2005. Heretofore, the manufacturers would most probably move on to developing the prototypes of the electronic protectors and introducing them at selected competitions. The ad-hoc committee, the KISS, and the manufacturing companies would then evaluate the success or failure of the system during the trial tests, and to redevelop the system, if necessary. If the trial tests prove successful, the WTF might decide to mass produce the electronic protectors for competition use. What is important is that the WTF exhaust its efforts on perfecting the systems and extensively evaluating the performances and technological abilities of the manufacturing companies. The decision on choosing the best manufacturing company, or companies for that matter, is essential, as it signifies our commitment to getting things right. In this regard, the selection and performances of the referees and judges, as well as the choice of the most appropriate manufacturer(s), should be one in the most transparent and prudent manner. In the meantime, it is hoped that there may be other forms of technological advancements to assist the referees and judges in their decision-making processes, such as the use of video replay. Nonetheless, without compromising too much of the humanistic elements in a dynamic, contact sport like taekwondo, the WTF should, and will, do its utmost to ensure that its referees and judges receive the best possible trainings and examinations. Above all, the WTF will ensure that its most competent officials represent the sport of taekwondo and the WTF in all championships and taekwondo-related events. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
