Thoughts? Comments? In my opinion, not any more than any other profession or hobby. (However you happen to think about the martial arts.) In this time of increased media coverage of everything, you hear about this sort of thing going on in all walks of life. Idiots abound everywhere. I don't really think the percentage of predators has increased over the years, nor do I think that the MAs attract predators (of this type) more than anything else. We just hear about it more often than we used to, that's all. Just like when Boy Scout leaders do something similar, the media makes it into a huge big deal. (Note: it is a big deal. That doesn't mean it is a common or oft-occurring big deal.) A martial art is not some panacea. It is up to the individual to decide what change they will make. To believe otherwise is to live in an unhealthy false reality. Most of us are martial artists but I highly doubt that many of us will resort to mental modification. Of course, it has also been shown that rhythmic motion does make the mind more susceptible to suggestion but that doesn't mean it will necessarily change us. We must CHOOSE what we want. Making that choice has nothing to do about whether or not what we do is a martial art. f. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 9 Feb 2006 18:27:42 -0800 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] PATU's poomsae seminar in Seoul Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net For more info email the PATU (Pan American TKD Union, the Official Governing Body for the Americas) at PATUHQ@aol.com. 1-703-333-3462 fax. Thanks for reading this post in the tone it was meant to be - cautionary. It does no one good just to mention bad news, however, it DOES pays to be conscious of potentially bad situations for you to have your instructors in without REALLY knowing him or her out of the Dojang. This was even an odder situation, as the male instructor was the husband of the head instructor. I guess you don’t always know everyone as well as you think and it pays to minimize potentially hazardous situations. I think the four rules (a-d) you noted are fairly good ones to maintain for all staff. Dana Bruce wrote: > >a.) You are never alone with a student--- male or >female. > >b.)
