A karate black belt comes to our taekwondo school, >should they wear a white belt? I am a rather lucky guy, I get a chance to travel a bit and teach seminars. So my perspective on this may be a bit different, be that as it may, here is my two cents. At seminars I sometimes get folks who come in and are wearing a white belt, but they do not move like a white belt. It does not take long to notice this and many times I will ask what rank they are, and ask them to wear their proper belt. >From my point of view I like it when people wear the rank that they have been awarded, it gives me a reference point to work from. It allows me to teach a seminar from the level of those present. I would teach a seminar that is predominantly white belt from that of a seminar that is made up of brown and black belts. Now I know this is not the same as a class that a person attends on a daily basis but I want to make a point. Black belts no matter what style or system will move different, assimilate techniques quicker, will be able to perform techniques with great speed and power, in general will stand a head above your lower ranks. Well - they should at any rate - if your white belts are at the same level as a visiting black belt - you either have white belts that need to be promoted or the black belt that has come to your school was promoted way too fast. I digress - even if you have a class of 300 students, it does not take but a few classes for students to know that there is a new black belt in your club - even if they are wearing a white belt. So, you are faced with a situation where you let the individual wear their belt, put them in a white belt, or put them in a white belt and promote them faster than normal. My preference and what I have done in the past is have them wear their black belt, even let them wear their patches from the other school and association. This does a couple of things. It shows respect for the black belt and their training, by having them wear their patches and old uniform it reinforces the idea that they are a black belt in another style or association. Thus, the students are aware of the differences AND they can see that someone who knows something about the martial arts has come to your school for instruction - a validation of their choice to come to your school. At the point in time that they chose to rank in your system they will be ready to put on the uniform of your club and the students will have seen them progress in skill and knowledge and notice that they have chosen to rank in your club. For me it's a win / win situation. If so, there's a cost there too. True. They want two small photos, about 1/3 the size of a passport size photo. I just use a digital camera and my trusty HP printer (I work at HP). Print, trim, and send.
