Known for his powerful and deadly kicks on screen as well as off, Hwang has a reputation as the Lord of the Superkickers. Born in Japan, Hwang's family moved back to their native Korea, where at the age of 14, Hwang began taking the national martial art of Tae Kwon Do. Hwang went on to teach the Korean Army TKD, and during his service, he killed a Vietnamese knife fighter in self defense. Hwang began his film career in his native Korea. In 1976, Ng See-Yuen, the founder of Seasonal Films, hired Hwang to play the villain Silver Fox in The Secret Rivals, where he goes toe to toe with Chinese superkicker John Liu. Hwang went on to establish himself as the best on screen kicker anyone has seen. He even played the villain in the two films that boosted Jackie Chan's career, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master. In 1980, after playing the villain for so long, Hwang directed, produced and starred as the hero in Hitman in the Hand of Buddha. After making many films, Hwang retired in 1990, where at first he ran a golf-tee manufacturing company and hotel in Seoul. He also suppsedly ran a bodyguard agency. Nevertheless, Hwang has established and stamped his Hong Kong career as the king of the Bootmasters. In 1994, Hwang starred in two low budget Korean films while running a hotel as well as a bodyguard service. Trivia Former taekwondo teacher of Korean Army This Korean powerhouse actually killed a man in real life (in self-defense). It seems the man was a "knife expert" who claimed that the knife is superior to "any" form of unarmed combat. Wang disagreed with that "statement" and an argument soon followed where the "knife expert" challenged Wang to "prove" his point to which Wang declined, went to turn his back when the guy lunged at him. Wang turned and fired a "round-kick" hitting the guy "square" in the temple, killing him instantly. Where are they now (January 2003) 9th Dan (grandmaster rank) in the art of Taekwondo under the ITF along with Rhee Ki Ha, Park Jong Soo and Charles Sereff --------------------------------- Yahoo! Seoul Seocho Police Station (Department of Intelligence) visited headquarter of the World Taekwondo Federation located in Seocho-dong at 1pm on 10th. They investigated the details of this case through Dong-Hoo Moon, Secretary General and seizure all of the information relating 'World Taekwondo Federation International Referee Management corruption' from WTF including referee and game committee. Decision of seizure and search by the police happened 3 days after WTF announced the results of their own inspection, which means this matter is now valued too great for Federation to solve on its own. Investigation was done in every department including referee, game, marketing, general affairs, and public relations committee and 2 boxes of documents were confiscated. Also, police will prohibit the staff and officials who are suspects of this case from leaving the country. However, chairman 'A' of the referee committee went on an official trip to US relating referee seminar from 10th to 14th. The view from the inside of the WTF and outside on this matter seems to have many significant differences. Inside the WTF, some said that, "Through this case we can see the actual result of WTF reforming, which WTF and president Choue have been pursuing, and it can also be the start of the true reformation of the Taekwondo." However, outside of WTF, some of the Taekwondo specialists say that, "This case shows that WTF dose not have the ability to reform on its own.", and added, "If chronic problems of the Taekwondo can not be solved on it own, Taekwondo can be convicted by outer force (procurator, police)." On the day of the investigation, WTF was quiet as usual, but however, many of the officials in referee and game committee were not present, showing disorganized atmosphere. There were also light struggles between Federation officials and reporters who were trying to cover the seizure and search of the police. Prior to this seizure and search, it is known that police have been pursuing investigation through the intelligence since the last month. After the self investigation of the WTF, the police asked for detailed information and started active investigation. It is assumed that the Police, which received the search warrant on 9th, will analyze the information based on the data they have confiscated, and summon the officials that are concerned to this matter if soon, next week. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] brief mention of Angela Mao-Ying's film about To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sat, 4 Mar 2006 07:43:14 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > out in the living room and watching Lady Kung Fu...or as it was called on > the video.."Hapkido" starring Angela Mao, Samo Hung, and Ji Han Jae...as we > watched the video Doju Nim Ji talked about the different things that > happened while filming and told us all about the martial artists in the > film.....man was that cool...watching that movie while Doju Nim sat in the > floor with us in his pajamas and basically broke down the movie for > us.... Part of the movie Hapkido that I gave Gm Ji and hard time about was when they showed a Hapkido class being taught. All they showed was basic kick #1. :) But that move of Gm Ji's early in the movie is very nice. What I found interesting was a paper i read on the ancient korean martial arts. The author mentioned one of the reasons why some of the ancient martial arts disappeared was because of a decline in the need for the military during long periods of peace which I think the author stated was the unification of korea. kind of reminds me of what we were discussing about the war and nowadays TkD....any thoughts? I think this idea comes from the fact that he has long trained with a guy named Nono who's out of Hermosa Beach, CA. Evidently, he's a Hapkido guy, and has coached Royce with his stand up fighting (kickboxing). He's also cornered Royce in more than a few of his fights. I know that Royce has said in an interview that Nono also works with him on "stickfighting". If you get that 'Superfit' book I think there's some pictures of Nono in there. Now, having said all of that I think Royce has probably picked up some small joint manipulation stuff from the guy. Reason I say that is because Royce finished Akebono off with a real slick omoplata/wrist lock combination. Of course, there are wrist locks in BJJ but I can't help but think he picked up some influence from Nono in that regard. That's my long way of saying that he trains with a Hapkido guy on certain aspects of martial arts, but I don't think he pursues Hapkido study in any real sense. I could be wrong. Now, the purists will poo-poo on me for saying this, but I honestly think the two arts can complement each other quite well. _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 2,100 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang **************************************************************************** SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES Go to London Fire at www.london-fire.gov.uk/firesafety This email is confidential to the addressee only. The plot of "Heaven's Soldiers" revolves around a group of South and North Korean soldiers who make an unexpected trip through time to the past, while their countries are in feud with the United States over their joint development of a nuclear warhead. >From director Min Jun Gi comes the 2005 film Heaven's Soldiers, a nationalistic, military-themed time travel adventure filled with equal parts action and comedy! The story centers on a group of North and South Korean soldiers who find themselves flung back in time just as their respective countries are locked in a tense standoff with the United States over the status of a jointly produced nuclear warhead. The film kicks off with stock footage of the historic meeting between the two Korean leaders in June 2000, using this real life moment as a springboard for the film's fictional premise that North and South Korea secretly formed an alliance, agreeing to co-produce their very own weapon of mass destruction! But when the two Koreas decide to hand over the warhead to the United States, North Korean military officer Kang Min Gil (Kim Seung Woo) decides to take matters into his own hands and not only steal the weapon with the help of a band of private soldiers but kidnap the female South Korean scientist (Kong Hyo Jin) who helped create it as well! Things get even more difficult for Kang as South Korean Navy Officer Park Jeong Woo (Hwang Jung Min) is sent by his superiors to capture the rogue soldier and reclaim the weapon. In the midst of a battle on the DMZ, the soldiers are suddenly transported through time thanks to the appearance of a mysterious comet. In a blink of the eye, the soldiers find themselves trapped in the 16th century, a dark time in Korean history, which saw its countrymen spending most of their time battling off the advances of foreign invaders. After defeating a band of looters with their high-powered machine guns, the time displaced soldiers are hailed as conquering heroes by the locals. Dubbed "Heaven's Soldiers," the group ends up meeting Yi Sun Shin (Park Joong Hoon), the real life admiral who led Korea to victory against the Japanese. However, the legendary Yi isn't quite what the soldiers expected. Rather than the mythical hero of legend he's thought to be in the present day, the Yi the soldiers encounter is actually a thief and a rascal, one who can't even pass the officer's exam! Shocked that their hero could be so lax in his studies, the soldiers give Yi a crash course in military education, all in the hopes he'll fulfill his destiny! But will Yi discover his true calling in time or will he doom both himself and his beloved country? Find out in Heaven's Soldiers, a crowd-pleasing time travel epic! --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life!
