He will be cremated and a memorial service will be held in Los Angeles in approximately two weeks. Howard Jackson had been battling leukemia the past several years. I had the good fortune of meeting and hanging out with him in a couple of WorldBlackBelt events, and I found him to be a very caring, easygoing gentleman. He will be greatly missed by the martial arts community and many of his friends. For more details, go to http://www.worldblackbelt.com . You are there to learn. Be respectful and be observent. You never know when the person you bumped into is the person who is going to be judging your ring later! Practice the way you intend to do it at the tournament, i.e., do your presentation every time so you have it down cold - and if you do mess up, either in presentation or in forms - keep going. If this is not a genre specific tournament, then the chance is good that your judges may be from other styles and not familiar with your form - they are looking for good basics - stances, folds, refolds, balance, intensity and respect. Good luck and have fun! Back into stealth mode..... Ellen Montgomery --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! I'm sure most of the folks on this list actually teach the non-physical aspects of MA. Going along with what you're saying, a good martial artist knows when they are in a place that could be compromising, and is always aware of what is going on around them. I wanted to address some of these concerns and reiterate to all of the people in our sport that this program is the right way to go and that this organization continues to move in a progressive direction. Why launch the CIDP Program? When I first assumed office here at USAT I made my number one priority to review existing programs and proposed new programs of the organization. Some ideas were postponed, some programs were discussed and rejected and other projects were approved. The CIDP was evaluated from top to bottom and received my strong endorsement. We looked at the benefits of the program, seriously considered the possible objections based on past programs and on costs and still concluded that we had to move in this direction. Please allow me to elaborate further on why we are going in this direction. In our sport, coaching education, identification and development have been poorly managed and implemented. Coaching certifications were often doled out on the basis of acquaintance and loyalty rather than merit. The end result was possession of a piece of paper that actually had very little value. That coaching certificate did not represent competency and achievement. This did not necessarily mean that there were not good coaches out there teaching taekwondo. It meant, however, that the existence of good coaches was somewhat random and fortuitous and it was not related to the coaching education programs. This was not only true for USTU/USAT but it also applied to every secondary and tertiary taekwondo organizations. The end result is that we do not have any world class athletes competing for places on our national teams. A further result was a terribly inconsistent experience for the general public seeking taekwondo training and knowledge. This was incredibly damaging both to our sport and to our organization. The USTU coaching certification had little value because it had no meat between the buns. What does the future hold for USA Taekwondo? USAT is committed to brand development as we lead our sport into the 21st century. We intend to establish and reinforce the USAT brand as synonymous with excellence in programming for taekwondo athletes, coaches and referees. To do this we had to create programming of quality and substance to help achieve our goals. We hired a high performance director, and national team coaches of international stature, and consulted an Olympic gold medalist and coaching education experts. This dream team of instructional knowledge was not inexpensive. We have invested considerable funds in creating the materials for this coaching identification and development program because we knew that nothing but the best would suffice. How do you justify the costs of the CIDP for the USAT membership? We have heard the complaints about pricing for these courses. The fees charged are absolutely in line with quality coaching education programs delievered by other NGBs and high level amateur sports organizations. We are a 501 C 3 not-for-profit corporation and any funds derived from seminar fees are funneled right back into our coaching programs. The mistakes of the past have been expunged from our organization. Our 990 forms are on-line for your inspection. We are not in this business to make a profit. Our funds are plowed back into programs of value for athletes, referees and coaches. We are going to deliver value back to you for your money. As our brand increases in recognition we will together be able to deliver a message to the general public that USAT is "the" organization for coaching development and instruction. Nobody offers the training we do for our coaches. Thus we will have increased value in our brand and the consumer will know that USAT is synonymous with quality. We are sensitive, however, to the concerns of the coaches. In response to those opinions we received we have decided to include the $60.00 coach pass fee in the level 1 seminar fee of $375.00. What are the benefits of the CIDP? Every student that walks through your door, regardless of athletic ability and potential as a world class athlete, deserves a highly qualified and certified coach as an educator. In this way we can increase the overall taekwondo experience. This will translate into greater attraction and retention of students. This is in no way the workings of an "elitist" organization. The experience we will deliver will be of the same quality for the lowest and highest level end user. The brand will stand for something and your school will reap that benefit. This program is an investment for all of us in the future of our sport. We can make this sport more popular so it gets the attention it deserves. We need a steady stream of quality coaches coming through the pipeline in order to properly spread the message of taekwondo throughout the land. We are the only taekwondo organization both capable of and willing to invest in valuable, quality programming for its members. Excellence comes at a price. We want you to think big picture and see that the cost of our program is a small investment for you to make in your future. We are convinced that if you participate you will see the benefits and reap the benefits. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Gordon" To: Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2006 11:54:56 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] MA Super Show 2006 Las Vegas Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I've been invited to the MA Super Show, July 6-8, 2006 in Las Vegas.
