Also, punches to the face would make > most of the flashier jump kicks too risky to try. The WTF was founded May 1973. No punches to the head in Tae Kwon Do well predates the WTF. But otherwise I fully agree. I also a agree that an artist ought be able to introduce, or deal with, spontaneity and creativity. If > I were to tie this into your original post I would say that a person would probably want to become "artistic" (read also: "spontaneous"; > "creative") with one art at a time. IMVVHO. > > Best Wishes, > > Bruce You may be right. But one of the things I think makes an artist is the ability to take everything that has been taught to us, what we have been able to learn on our own, put it all together and take it one step further and make it something unique and something that is our own. Not something that is simply a copy of what we have learned from others. I look at it as increasing the body of knowledge of a system. I just don't believe that you can teach a system, any system and continue to teach is as you were taught. Then expect your students to teach it the way you taught, and so on. To me its like making a photocopy of a photocopy. Each generation of the copy becomes degraded, I think martial arts are the same. We MUST increase the body of knowledge of a system. This may be at odds with some who consider themselves "traditional" but I believe it can be argued that the "founders" themselves modified what they had been taught and incorporated new ideas into what they were teaching. Heck, even today you see this happening. As examples; the WTF changing forms like some change their underwear (OK hopefully the underwear is changed more often), the ITF adding in the Sine wave, changes in rules for sparing, which lead to changes in strategy of sparing. All kinds of changes occur in the martial arts. The "artist" is the one that makes the changes, not the robot that simply mimics the techniques taught to them.
