Many times they offer classes to their youths that were born here. That helps to maintain their culture. If you find the right one, they will accept you in. f. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: 09 Apr 2006 07:58:41 -0700 From: "Robert Martin" To: Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2006 08:58:32 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Oh Do kwan Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Master Terry, I don't know if I would call GM Nam the "real" force behind the founding of the ITF. He was a force for sure. Master Earl Weiss of Chicago did a short article on him in TKD Times a few years back ( http://www.geocities.com/ustfregion5/NamTaeHi.html ). GM Nam is much respected by many in the ITF. They offer great tips on how to speak Korean, and how to step up on your written Korean. It will teach you some basic grammer and some very helpful words for convorsation. Korean isn't as hard as Japan's language, and even if you get the formal/informal words mixed up people usally understand what you are saying. Anyways,  Take a look at this. I found it very helpful. http://froogle.google.com/froogle?btnG=Search+Froogle&q=Lonely+Planet+Korean Hope this helps you out! Amcreva ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Powerful parental controls improve your peace of mind with MSN Premium. Or the way i learned is to seek out a korean master in your MA style, and beg and plead with him/her to teach you. For payment i watched thier two beautiful young girls while they were teaching class. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! It's at... http://langintro.com/kintro/ Everyday Korean is written in Hangul, an extremely well put together and phoentic Alphabet (I think it was created in about the 1400's). I've found that by learning the alphabet has helped me to discover nuances in pronounciation that I didn't pick up before. David's introction also has some sound files that gives pronunciation of some words and the vowels. I find distinguishing between some of the sounds very difficult for my American ear. Anyway, by going through the introduction I've been able to "read" (i.e. sound out) words that I've seen written in Korean on certificates and black belts and the like. It's really pretty cool... -- Erik Kluzek http://www.coloradobluewave.org !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 09:33:25 -0400 From: "Burdick, Dakin Robert" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Bursting Ray's bubble Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >> Did anyone else catch the part about Yoon Byung-in missing the most of his left pinky? Anyone else think, "yakuza"? Always a fun thought, but you know, my American instructor, Don Burns, is missing half his thumb. He caught it in his garage door years ago. Yoon may have lost his pinky some other way, but certainly he trained in Japan and the possibility of that yakuza connection was there. >> I had someone burst my bubble back in the mid '90s with some e-mails... > I think Dakin burst mine in the mid to late 1980s on rec.martial-arts. I never touched the man! I swear! lol -- thanks Ray I needed a laugh this morning. :) I remember chatting back then - but my first paper went up in 1990. And the hate mail followed soon after.
