The sound helps them judge where their opponent is and distance. The reason I am saying this is many years ago when I was testing for my 4th degree blackbelt at a national tournament I was paired up with another 3rd degree for sparring who was blind. They told me to talk or give verbal encouragement so he knew where I was. I was amazed at how well he could judge distance and my position and he sparred very well. He also did all of the required board breaks and etc. and passed his test. Hope that helps. You may want to use your blackbelts to work with him initially until he learns to judge distance better since they will be better equiped to protect themselves and not hurt your blind student in the process. Also as far as the targets for drills, if the blind student touches the target with a hand he will then be able to learn to judge the height of the target and the distance based on his step back, even in an advancing drill if he is moving forward one stace at a time and if the person holding the target keeps it the height the student touched and also gives some verbal feed back so your blind student can learn to judge distance based on sound. I hope that helps. After some basic knowledge was aquired, she began to spar and do target work by pinning bells on the targets and on the hand and foot pads of her sparring partners. I had the honor of judging her on many occasions and would do my best to stifle a laugh when she would block a punch and accurately counter with a kick. During forms competition, I would constantly tap a part of my chair with a pen or pencil so that she would always have a reference point. With permission from the other competitiors, she would be allowed to fight in what would be her normal division, but her opponents would wear the bells. A tip of the JRW chapeau for truly having an "indomitable spirit"! On a side note, 20 years later, she is still teaching in Louisiana and was married at one time to her instructor.........Great lady, and she taught me volumes!......JRWest www.hapkido.com --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Don Ross" To: "dojang_digest" Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2006 09:04:28 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] learning language Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello List, True, one doesn't need to learn the native language to learn a MA. Beyond showing respect for the roots the MA, however, requiring Korean terminology in class seems to A) "...Train both mind and body", B) help weed out the wannabes from the sincere students, C) improve focus and concentration [ie, this is now KMA time, not soccer practice]. It appeared that the guy taking out the money looked uncomfortable with the guy standing behind him...and he "over-rode" his correct fear response. Although it appears to be Monday-morning-quarterbacking, the victim, when his correct instincts kicked in, should have said, "Oh silly me, I've forgotten my ATM card," and got out of that box as fast as possible. Who cares what that looks like? Why are people worried about what a stranger thinks of their apparent odd behavior? Why not get out, let the other guy "use" the ATM, and come back to it when it is safer or go to another one altogether? The emotion of fear gets a bad rap. It's a really good thing. Listen to it...as that indicator more often than not comes up later after something awful happens and the victim (if lucky enough to be alive) recalls their internal signals they should have responded to which would have kept them out of trouble. -Brooke Hapkido Blend --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2006 14:24:40 -0400 From: "Woodard Brian (ChP/TEF8)" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Hapkido Instructor Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello all; I have been desperately trying to find a local Hapkido instructor in the Charleston, SC area. I found a gentleman by the name of Tim Haney. Are any you familiar with this guy? If so please email me privately. I would like to hear a little about him and his style before I went to visit him. I have absolutely NO experience in Hapkido but wish to train in it in addition to the TKD I now train in. The following link is a description and picture of him. http://www.chas-ma.com/haney.htm Thanks in advance for your comments. However, why is it so difficult to believe their are still people in this world that are descendants (if you will), from older lineages, other than what Master.Suh is offering. These people are very hard to find, but are closer than most of you think. For my extra 2 cents: if you see a KJMS school or any other similar Kuk Sool dojangs , go in and try it...you never know what you may learn.
