As we all know, in the old days in to some extent now, those not up to the task were weeded out by green belt. But on deep reflection as a martial artist, as a physical education teacher and as some one that believes strongly in the virtues of Taekwondo. I feel that perhaps we are confusing religion with taekwondo. Taekwondo is after all a sport. It's a sport with a truly beautiful set of codes and standards of ethical behavior that when practiced well, make one a truly excellent person. But we live in an imperfect world. A world that is not all or nothing and is more evil than good most of the time. So I really don't worry much that people in my school don't make blackbelt because they end up better than when they started. I don't fret much at the imperfect first dan, because he learned basics instead of eating cheese doodles on his couch. And I truly worry much more about those people that make high dan and are abusive and abrasive. Taekwondo is for everyone in some measure...in some way...in some application. Quality will out...and skill will become apparent in those that have it. In fact, I would like to see programs for persons interested in short term programs leading only to a color belt if that's all they can do, without giving them the feeling they didn't finish something. At 56 and third dan, I will never be a 9th dan. Does that mean I didn't complete the task before me? NOOOOO!!! I am so proud of what I've done, so happy to share that with others and so eager to continue as long as I can. I feel we are a library. Some come once a year, some every day but all know that this is the place to touch base for something good and wonderful. I hope always that my dojang will give off that spirit. I do not consider most cage fighters as martial artist anyway. Those that do >>>generally have outside income by selling their programs/books/consulting, >>>seminars, or organizational fees. > I taught a successful adult only school for almost twenty years before I earned the ability to subsidize my income with seminars, and for the first few years I held my seminars only to teach my direct students and as long as I didn't lose money I was good. That's why I generally show up with four assistants....it makes a better learning experience for the attendees, but transporting, housing and feeding these lugs sure does eat away at the profits. My Law Enforcement "Officer Survival Workshops" ( I have one Monday night ) & Military Seminars are always done for free in an attempt to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Yes, I do a LOT of consulting, and my phone rings all day long with questions from school owners, but I do it at no charge. Ask any member of the USKMAF what our organizational fees are, and you will figure out that my 24 year old car will have to last for a while yet. It is true that if I went to the trouble to add a kid's only class, it would increase my bottom line, but in my opinion, it wouldn't be worth the extra headache, and I am quite comfortable with what I do in my crotchety old age. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 19:20:13 -0600 From: "Jay O'Connor" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Hybrid Hapkido? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Edit/Delete Message Is anyone familiar with this school? Calvary Family Hybrid Hapkido (http://www.calvaryfamilymartialarts.com/indexhapkido.asp) They are in Colorado Springs, Colorado I'm thinking of checking it out as a more self-defense oriented martial arts school and was wondering if anyone had heard of them. We currently do Taekwondo with self-defense derived from Taekwondo, Hapkido, and some judo and this looks like it has that focus. (We are moving to C.Springs) Thanks Take care, Jay --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 19:00:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net, itf-taekwondo@yahoogroups.com Subject: [The_Dojang] Video clips: applications for chon ji Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net http://www.natkd.com/movies/Seminar_Techniques/Chon-Ji%20Applications.wmv http://www.natkd.com/movies/Seminar_Techniques/Chonjiapp2.wmv Source: http://www.natkd.com/seminar_techniques.htm --------------------------------- Yahoo! Where did TKD's hoshinsul routines come from? I notice they vary from school to school so who designed them and where did they get them? Jye --------------------------------- Yahoo!
